I. COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS :
Answer briefly the following questions :
1.) Why was a large crowd assembled in the arena?
Answer: A day was fixed to test and exhibit the proficiency in the use of arms of the Pandavasa and the Kauravas. To witness their performance, the royal family along with the public was invited so there was a large crowd assembled in the arena.
2.) What did Duryodhana envy?
Answer: Arjuna displayed superhuman skill with his weapons and the vast assemblage was lost in wonder and admiration and this is why Duryodhana envied Arjuna.
3.) How does the writer introduce Karna to the assembly?
Answer: The writer introduces Karna in an impressive way. At the close of the day, there came suddenly from the entrance of the arena a sound, loud and compelling like thunder the sound made by the slapping of mighty arms in challenge. All eyes turned in that direction. They saw enter through the crowd, which made way in awed silence, a godlike youth from whom light and power seemed to emanate. It was Karna.
4.) What was the cause for Duryodhana’s exultation?
Answer: With taking Drona’s leave, Karna duplicated all Arjuna’s feats with careless ease which made Duryodhana exulted.

Answer: Kripacharya objected to Karna joining in the battle because Karna’s linage and parentage was not known and Arjuna being high – born princes couldn’t engage in single combat with unknown adventurers.
9.) How did Duryodhana restore Karna’s honour?
Answer: Duryodhana declared that he would crown Karna as the king of Anga. He obtained the assent of Bhishma and Dhritarashtra, performed all the necessary rites and invested Karna with the sovereignty of the kingdom of Anga giving him the crown, jewels and other royal insignia.

Answer: When Bhima saw that Karna was the son of a charioteer, then he laughed at him. Bhima said that he was not worthy of death at the hands of Arjuna and also not worthy to reign in as a king of Anga.

Answer: Duryodhana defends Karna like a true friend. He says to Bhima that valour is the hall-mark of Kshatriya and there was no sense in tracing sources of greater heroes. He also said that Bhima too would be questioned of his own origin. He also points out that Karna had godlike form with armour and earrings that made him a warrior.

Answer: Indra foresaw that a supreme contest was inevitable between his son Arjuna and Karna. He put on the garb of a Brahman and came to Karna, who was reputed for his charity, and begged of him his earrings and armour.

Answer: Karna could not bring himself to refuse any gift that was asked of him.
b) What does this tell us about Karna’s character?
Answer: His act tells us that Karna was man of words and kind who didn’t let anyone down.
14.) Why does Indra offer a boon to Karna? What is the boon?
Answer: When Karna gave his earrings and armour with which he was born, Indra became happy and offered a boon to Karna. Karna desired to get Indra’s weapon, i.e.the Sakti. Indra granted the boon.
15.) Indra granted the boon with a condition. What was the condition?
Answer: Indra granted the boon to Karna by laying one condition that with his weapon, the Sakti he could kill only one enemy and it will kill him whosoever he may be. But after this killing, the weapon will no longer be available to him but will return to Indra.
16.) How did Parasurama realise that Karna was not a Brahmana?
Answer: When Parasurama was reclining with the head on Karna’s lap, a stinging worm burrowed into Karna’s thigh. Blood began to f low and the pain was terrible, but Karna bore it without tremor lest he would disturb the master’s sleep. Parasurama awoke and saw the blood which had poured from the wound. He then said to Karna that he was not a brahmana because only a kshatriya can remain unmoved under all bodily torments.
17.) What was Parasurama’s curse?
Answer: When Parasurama got to know that Karna was not a brahmana but the son of charioteer, then Parasurama got angry and cursed him. He cursed Karna by saying that since he had deceived his guru, the Brahmastra that he had learnt will fail at the fated moment. He will be unable to recall the invocatory mantra when his hour came.

Answer: Bhishma asked Karna to befriend the Pandavas as that was the right path for him who was their brother.

Answer: Lord Krishna who was Arjuna’s charioteer, at the nick of time, pressed the vehicle down five fingers deep in the mud, so that the serpent shaft just missed Arjuna’s head but struck off his helmet.

Answer: When Lord Krishna recounted many acts of Karna which were violated by him, then Karna bent his head in shame and uttered not a word.
b) What does this tell you about Karna?
Answer: This tells us that Karna was didn’t have evil intentions. He was under the pressure of Duryodhana as he was faithful to him; he had to obey him and did such things.
24.) Why was Arjuna’s mind wavering when Lord Krishna asked him to slay Karna?
Answer: Lord Krishna incited Arjuna to kill Karna when Karna was vainly trying to raise his chariot out of the mud in which it had stuck. According to the code of honour and laws of war prevailing then, it was wholly wrong.
25.) Was killing Karna when he was not ready for the fight wrong?
Answer: According to the code of honor and laws of war at that time, it was completely wrong to kill Karna when he was not ready for the fight. But when Krishna recounted the wrong deeds made by Karna, then he incited Arjuna to kill Karna as it was the fair play.
26.) How does the poet justify this wrong?
Answer: The poet had not the heart to impute this act to Arjuna who was the embodiment of nobility. It was the Lord Krishna that incited Arjuna to kill Karna when he was vainly trying to raise his chariot out of the mud in which it had stuck. Except for the Lord himself, no one could bear the responsibility for breaches of dharma.

1) Karna is easily one of the most tragic and compelling characters of the epic. List any five great qualities of Karna which you admire most. Justify your choice of qualities.
Answer: The first that I admire about Karna is that he had great heroic power. He outshines Arjuna who was a great archer. He challenged Arjuna where there were number of people gathered. He was fearless. Another quality of Karna is that he was a faithful friend of Duryodhana. He promised to be there for Duryodhana in every circumstance and kept his word. He was very loyal to him. Karna had a big heart. He very easily gave his earrings and armor which was there with him since his birth to Indra who asked for it.He respected elders. When Bhisma requested him to befriend the Panadavas, he denies it but keeping his respect for him. Karna was well aware about his wrong deeds. When Lord Krishna recounted his wrong deeds, he didn’t argue, he just bent his head. He accepted his wrong deeds.
2.) Epics highlight eternal values. From your study of these excerpts, list any five values which, in your view, are very relevant to our lives today.
Answer: Honesty, true friendship, valour, respecting elders and speaking truth are five values which are even relevant to our lives today. We do come across some people in our society who are honest and work honestly. True friendship is something that every man desires for. We feel lucky if we have good and true friends around us. Faithful friends are treasure for life. Having fearless attitude in the times of challenges makes a person strong. Possessing valor makes us face anything in life. Our army is a perfect example of great valor. Just like Karna who never disrespected the elders, we must also follow the same. Even in today’s life, we see many people who respect the elders very much. We should always take the path of truth. Through such epics, we get to learn what to follow and what not to follow.
