1.) Why were the old man’s clothes dusty? Why did he not cross the bridge?
Answer: The old man was seventy-six years old who had travelled for twelve kilometres through a dusty road which made his clothes dusty. Since he was tired, he couldn’t go farther so he didn’t cross the bridge.
2.) Why did the old man leave San Carlos? Why did the old man want to go to Barcelona?
Answer: The old man left San Carlos because of the artillery that the captain told him. The old man was too tired to walk farther so he decided to go Barcelona as the trucks were going there.
3.) ‘Oh,’ I said, not quite understanding…… ‘What was it about the old man’s statement, ‘I was taking care of animals’, What was it that the narrator did not understand?
Answer: The narrator couldn’t understand the old man’s statement of what animals the old man was taking care of as he didn’t look like a shepherd nor a herdsman.

Answer: The narrator expected the approaching battle to take place near the bridge where the old man was sitting.

Answer: The old man means the goats by saying ‘the others.’ According to him, a cat can look out for itself and pigeons can fly but the only the goats would have problem and they would not be able to save themselves.

Answer: Yes, the old man looked upon his animals as his family as they were the only companions of him. He worried about them because he had left them to come to a safer place. He was worried that the artillery fire would kill them all.
7.) The old man was a victim of the war, but he had no wish to play a part in it. How do you come to know of this from the story?
Answer: The old man was a selfless person who didn’t bother about the politics, what mattered to him was only his animals. He was a victim of the war and that is why he left his family and went to a safer place.
8.) Wars have an adverse effect on our lives. How does the story bring out this truth?
Answer: Wars definitely have adverse effects on everyone’s lives not just humans.In this story, the old man is least concerned about the politics. To save himself, he walks a long distance leaving his family which shows how war can affect everyone. People crossing the bridge to go for safer places for their safety and protection show nothing but the ill-effects of the war. Not just humans, but animals, birds and trees too are affected in the wars. At least humans can survive in such tough situation but the innocent and dumb creatures don’t have option.
