India was engaged in violent conflicts in the period of 1949-1951 against the Kashmir issue and in 1961 against Chinese invaders in Siachen. The internal security forces are of immense importance for the smooth governance of India. The internal forces of India comprises the paramilitary force. Its functions are similar to the Indian armed forces.Also known as the Central Armed Police forces, they play a pivotal role in border security as well as internal security.

iii) Central Industrial Security Forces (CISF)

CISF’s role is to provide protection to the public sector undertakings. With 165,000 trained personnel it is the biggest industrial security force in the world.

iv) Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP)

The Indo-Tibetan Border Police was formed after the Indo-China war for reforming the intelligence and security departments along the Indo-Tibetan border to restrain illegal immigration and inter-border smuggling. In order to achieve the “One Border One Force”, the entire distance of the Indo-China border was assigned to the ITPB by posting Th AR in Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh.

v) National Security Guard (NSG)

The NSG was established in 1980s to combat terrorist activities and to ensure that states do not face any terrorist disruptions. The NSG was deployed during the 1993 Bombay blasts, the Parliament attack of 2001 and the BombayTerrorist Attacks of 2008.

vi) Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB)

The Sashastra Seema Bal came into existence in 1963 to protect the Indo-Nepal and  Bhutan Borders. The region is particularly sensitive for it is an open stretch of the border of 2450kms which affords easy opportunities for traffickers and smugglers but also offers scope for foreign-trained infiltrators to pose serious national security threats.
