India’s claim to security council of the United Nations Essay : United Nations Security Council had been established in the year 1945, which is in charge of maintaining world peace and security as well as accepting new member in the UN and formulating rules and policies towards security related matter of the nation’s. It is the only United Nations body which issues binding authority to its member states. It authorizes its security council to investigate any situation across countries that affects international peace and security of the nation’s.
Member of the UNSC
These exists a total of 15 members in the council, out of which 5 are permanent members and 10 are non permanent. The five permanent members include France, Russia, China, United Kingdom and The United States. India is included in the non permanent members. The non permanent members are elected every two year term. While the permanent member are replaced every year.
India and the UNSC
India had been elected as a non permanent member of the UNSC in June 2020. Prior India had been first elected in 1950- 1951.
Although India being a non permanent member of the UNSC it stakes claim to be part of the permanent membership with the UNSC. But has not been successful. India having a huge population, growing economy and nuclear power has still not be able to achieve permanent membership in the UNSC.
Roadblocks to India achieving permanent membership in the UNSC
India being one of the countries involved in the peacemaking process of several nation’s, currently being nuclear power house and with its growing economy is still trying to make its claim in the permanent seat for UNSC. It faces several roads blocks some of which are as under;
- Countries like China has been a major road block for India to achieve permanent seat, with China’s population and economystill on a higher side and the objections brought in by China to make India a permanent member.
- India’s another road block could be due to the rapidly growing nuclear base, making other nations object India`s entry in the UNSC permanently. However nation’s like France have supported India in becoming a permanent member of the UNSC.
Conclusion
India will very soon be a super power nation with the rapid developments and rising population. With a strong military and armed forces, but India may not be able to attain a permanent seat in the UNSC, due to opposition from the other nation. However that will not be a big concern, as India will become a strong nation by itself that UNSC will become useless without our support to the membership.
