The Hemis Gompa festival is one of the wealthiest festival of Ladakh. This festival is celebrated to mark the Guru Padmasambhava’s birth anniversary as well. Who is popularly known as the founder of Vajrayana Buddhism in laddakh. There is the biggest and very richly endowed monestery in ladhakh which is known as Hemis monestery. This monestery is situated around 45 kms to the south of leh on the westerns banks of the Indus river. The Hemis Gompa festival is also referred as the celebration of good over evil. It is the renowned festival which takes place in the Hemis Gompa or the monestery as well. This festival greatly represents the ritual of Ladakhi culture. The Hemis gompa is a Tibetian Buddhist Monestery of the Druka Lineage that was build in the 16th century by the famous Ladakh king, king sengge Namgyal. It is the biggest Gompa of Ladakh that represents the Druka Kagyupa teachings. As per the Tibetian lunar calendar, this two day peagot is specifically held on the tenth and the elevanth day of the fifth month which is known as Non. That occurs in every Jun month itself. To celebrate this ospicious day, Ladakhis dress up in the finest traditional attire and gathers at the courtyard of the Monestery as well. The ceremony starts with the early morning rituals and the prayers in the Monestery. Where in the middle of the beat drums and the spiritual wall of pipes the portraits of Dadmokarpo is ceremoniously put on display for the visitors to admire. A numbers of the musicians play the traditional music with four pair of cymbals, coco- phony of large pan drums, small trumpets and large size wind instruments, all of which are belived to ward off evil spirits as well. Next to those performers, a space is reserved for the honorary lamas to witness this ospicious event. The lamas recites the mantras associated with the various sections of the dances that depicting the tales of wars between the good and evils. The observances of tantric Buddhist rituals and the traditional performances venerating lord Padmasambhava attracts to the thousands of tourists and the devotees from across the globe every year. The colourful feast, exquisite handcrafts and richly adorned masks performances can bee seen here as well. This is how the people of Ladakh celebrate the hemis gompa festival with great zeal and the enthusiasm as well.
