In the Indian tradition every festival or the day is celebrated on the basis of astronomical phenomena. Sun, moon, planets and nakshatra produces a kind of mystical energy during an astrological event. We celebrate the festival to get the maximum benifits from that. The ‘Guru Purnima ‘ is also the festival from one of them. We celebrate this festival on the day of full moon. Although the full moon come in every month yet there is the specialty in the full moon of ‘Ashadh ‘ month which is one of the hindu religious month. As we all know that sun has two types of movements that is ‘uttarayan ‘ which means north side and ‘dakshinayan ‘ which means the south side as well. The longest day in the northern hemisphere is known as ‘solar solstice’. After that the summer solstice starts and the sun starts moving in the south direction. The fisrt full moon after the summer solstice and the Sun’s south direction movement is being collaborated as ‘Guru Purnima ‘. Because there are some events in the cosmos. On this day moon will be in the sign of the planet jupiter. That is, Sagittarius and is in the constellation which is reffered as the Nakshatra of the planet Jupiter at purvashadha and uttar ashadha and the sun will be in 180 degree of moon in Gemini and in the constellation of Ardra. This kind of combination develops a guiding force. Hence, we celebrate the festival of ‘ Guru Purnima ‘,so that this guiding force can sync in us. Just like there are two words ‘Guru ‘ and ‘purmina’. So the importance of ‘ purnima ‘ is guiding force that develops in the cosmos. We all celebrate ‘Guru purnima ‘ to give respect and endose our masters or teachers who tought us the skills or the knowledge of the certain things as well. But for the Guru, the definition in the scriptures is different. There are two charecter in ‘Guru ‘ which can be understood by the very famous interpretation of Guru that is given in the ‘Advaytarak Upnishad ‘.
Which is,
” Gushabdstyandhakar styat sushabdastatrirodhak | Andhakarnirodhitvat Gururityabhidhiyate || ”
That means, ‘Gu’ means darkness or the ignorance, ‘ru’ means destroyer. Hence, who destroys or wipes the darkness and the ignorance in our life that known as the guru itself. Therefore, the best day for the soul searching or our divine growth as well as the spiritual growth is ‘Guru purnima ‘. It is the traditionally time when the seekers offer the guru their gratitude and also recide his blessings as well. This day is also considered as especially the benificial day to practice the yogic sadhana and the meditation as well. This day is considered as the very significant day in the hindu religion and the people also celebrate it with the same devotion and the feelings towards it.
