Gerund for Class 6 English Grammar:
** A gerund is that form of the verb that ends in – ‘ing’ & has the force of a noun or a verb.
For eg – (i) I like reading books
(ii) He is fond of travelling.
* In sentence (i) the Gerund, like a noun, is the object of a verb but like a verb it also takes an object that denoting the force of a verb.
* In sentence (ii) the gerund is governed by a preposition (of) but like a verb it also takes an object.
* Both gerund & particular have the force of a noun & a verb, as they have some uses. Thus in many sentences either of them may be used without any special difference in the meaning
* Teach me to draw
– Teach me drawing
* To read is to pass
– Reading is passing
* Compound gerund are formed by placing a past particle after gerunds of have & be.
For eg – (i) I heard of him having received a prize
(ii) We are tired of having walked so far.
* The gerund has the force of a noun & a verb, it is called verbal noun. The present participle has the force of an adjective & a verb, it is a verbal adjective
Eg – (i) he is fond of reading books.
(ii) The old man is tired of standing
* The gerund also complements a verb.
* Seeing is believing.
