Two stories of Ganesha’s Birth –

  • First one – There are two competing stories about Ganesha’s birth. According to legend, Goddess Parvati formed Ganesha out of mud on her body while bathing and assigned him to guard the door while she finished her bath. Shiva, who had gone out, returned at that time, but Ganesha was unaware of it.
  • Second – Shiva, who’d already left out, emerged at around that time, but Ganesha, not understanding who he was, prevented him from approaching. After a conflict between the two, a furious Shiva amputated Ganesha’s head. Parvati was furious, and Shiva pledged Ganesha he was going to live again. The gods who looked in search of a deceased person’s head facing north could only find the head of an elephant. Shiva resubmitted the elephant’s head to the infant and resurrected him.
  • According to another mythology, Shiva and Parvati created Ganesha at the request of the Devas to be a vighnakartaa (obstacle-creator) in the way of rakshasas (devilish entities) and a vighnahartaa (extra hurdle) to assist the Heavenly beings.
