Freedom of speech and expression is the right of every individual to express his opinion, ideas, thoughts without and force, fear of being prosecuted or censored by the state. It is often said that freedom of speech and expression should not lead the pathway towards Nationalism.Freedom of speech and expression should not be misused. Freedom of expression does not give anyone the right to convert Colleges/Institutions into a hub of Anti-National Activity. No anti-national slogans can be allowed in the name of freedom of speech. None should make statements questioning the National Integrity and Sovereignty of India.

Nationalism

Nationalism has been defined as a large group of people who share the same culture, interest, history, language, ethnicity, and who feel loyal and proud citizens of their nation. Nationalism brings immense feeling of patriotism towards the nation. Citizens of the nation get this feeling of pride towards working for the nations and bringing about bright changes towards the development of the country.

Freedom of Speech vs Nationalism in recent times.

It is very important to understand that Nationalism and Freedom goes hand-in-hand. With every right comes responsibility, so while exercising such rights it becomes necessary to follow the Fundamental Duties as well as laid down by the Constitution of India. It is for this Nationalism that we can exercise our Fundamental rights. Nationalism is an individual feeling of patriotism towards our country and a feeling of pride, loyalty and commitment towards the Nation.

Recently we have seen massive protest by students of universities and medical institutions in India and the policies of the Government. They protest against the Government causing damage to the society and public property these protests go against the nations constitution and thus are termed as anti-national activities which can cause serious punishment. Anti-national slogans and marches does not form part of freedom of speech or expression as per the constitution of India. Public debates and healthy discussion on the policies of the Government against human rights, thus freedom of speech and expression must be understood in a deeper sense before making wrong use of this principle.

The recent protest of the JNU students has sparked a massive debate between freedom of speech and nationalism in the year 2016.The incident caused students to raise slogans against India and the Government, thus police force had to be deployed for manhandling the students leading to massive outrage with media creating more hype which this has affected the minds of the individuals and thereby fueling up the debate of freedom of speech vs nationalism.

Freedom of Speech and Expression and Nationalism co-exists and go hand-in-hand. However there exist restrictions with regards to freedom of speech and expressions to a certain extent. It only grants the citizens of the country the basic right to freely expressions his or her opinion without any force or to speak freely without any Government restraint.
