Summary
‘Footprints without feet’, is based on a novel by Herbert George Orwell, it revolves around the succeeding thoughts:
- Science is a boon but also a bane.
- If discoveries are approached inappropriately and are misused for selfish motives such as money and comfort, they can cause great havoc.
- The entire world’s intelligence is in vain if it’s not directed towards common good.
The story unfurls with two confused boys, who were following the imprints of a pair of bare feet with the only confusion being, where was the man bearing those footprints? The mystery never resolved for the kids as the imprints disappeared in a while.
The answer to their fascination was rather simple. The man was Griffin; he was a brilliant scientist, who had attained the formula of invisibility after multiple experiments. His body adapted the characteristics of a sheet of a glass- transparent and solid as he gulped down the rare drugs.
Griffin was a lawless, quick-tempered and inhumane person despite his great scientific discoveries. His landlord disliked Griffin for his ways, and tried to eject him, so Griffin decided to set the whole house on fire. He had to run away, without clothes and without money as those would be visible unlike him; and to add to it, he was a homeless wanderer in the harsh and bitter cold of London.
Luckily for him, he easily got rid of the boys and sneaked into a big London store. He gave himself the pleasure of clothing such as an overcoat and a hat and the cold meat as well as coffee that he found in the kitchen after the store got closed, he later slept in a pile of quilts. Griffin woke up late, and saw some assistants approaching him, out of panic, he started to run as they tried to chase.
He took off his clothes and went to Drury Lane, the centre of the theatre world. There he wore bandages around his forehead, dark glasses, false nose, big bushy side-whiskers, and a large hat; he callously attacked the owner to steal some money and escaped.
He took a train to the village of Iping where he booked two rooms at a local inn. The inn’s owner and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Hall, were very happy as there were generally no visitors during winters. Griffin made his point of solidarity and no disturbance quite clear to Mrs. Hall. He also mentioned an accident to back his bandaged appearance. She excused his strange habits and irritable temper, as she was satisfied from his profession and advance payment.
When Griffin ran out of stolen money, he asked the lady for some more time to pay. Shortly after, he robbed a clergyman, who was shocked to find no one in his study or anywhere else, he regarded this as an extraordinary affair. But something even more extraordinary was Mrs. Hall’s incident. She tried to investigate through the open door of the scientist’s room, only to find it empty; she then heard a sniff and was later attacked by a hat and her mother’s old chair, and the door was slammed on her face.
She was convinced that this was all witchcraft, for which the stranger was responsible; she was highly suspicious of him regarding the village’s recent robbery as well as the fact that he had produced hard cash all of a sudden. A police constable was sent to take a look into the unprecedented issue, but instead of waiting for him, Mrs. Hall herself started interrogating the peculiar Griffin. He got furious at this and started to remove his bandages to show his true identity.
The horrified people were staring at a headless man! Mr. Jaffers, the police constable wasn’t afraid and tried to get hold of Griffin who was becoming more and more invisible as he threw off his clothes one after another. After the last garment, the shirt, was thrown away, both the constable as well as the people trying to help him struggled a lot to catch him and were getting hit by blows out of nowhere.
Griffin knocked the constable unconscious among the other nervous cries. He broke free, disappeared in thin air and nobody could lay hands on him.

So Griffin set fire on his house. It was then that he became a homeless, invisible wanderer, with no money, clothes and shelter.
Instead of making his invention for the welfare of people, Griffin began to cheat people. To survive himself, his very first idea was to steal clothes from a big London store. He crept inside the store just before closing and after everything was shut down, he began to cover himself with shoes, an overcoat and a hat. He fed himself with cold meat and coffee, followed by sweets and wine. Then he slept on a pile of quilts. The next day he escaped from the staff of the store by throwing away his clothes so that he wasn’t visible to anyone. His next target was Drury Lane, centre of the theatre world. There he snatched clothes for him and also attacked a shopkeeper and stole from him all the money he had.
