Find the common factors in 4x2, 36x

Ans:

4x2 = 4 × x × x

36x = 4 × 9 × x

(b) 4x is the common factor.

 

Question 2:

Find the common factors in 15y, 60y2

(a) 9y

(b) 3y

(c) 15y

(d) 4y

Ans:

15y = 15×y

60y2 = 15 × 4 × y × y

(c) 15y is the common factor

 

Question 3:

Factorise x3 + 2xy + 3x2 + 4x

(a) y (x2 + y + 4)

(b) x (x + y + 4)

(c) y2 (x – 4)

(d) x (x2 + 2y + 3x + 4)

Ans:

x3 + 2xy + 3x3 + 4x

= (x × x × x) + (2 × x × y) + (3 × x × x) + (4 × y)

= x (x2 + 2y + 3x + 4) (d)

Factorise 5x – 25x2

(a) 5x (1 – 5x)

(b) 5x (1 – 2)

(c) 2x

(d) 5x2

Ans:

= 5 × x – 5 × 5 × x × x

= 5x (1 – 5x) (a)

Factorise x2 + 6x + 9

(a) (x – 3)2

(b) (x + 3)2

(c) (x + 3)3

(d) x – 3

Ans:

= x2 + 6x + 9

= x2 + 3 × x × 2 + 32

= (x + 3)2 (b)

 

Question 6:

Factorise 4y2 – 12y + 9

(a) (2y – 3)2

(b) (2y + 3)2

(c) 2y – 3

(d) 2y + 3

Ans:

= 4y2 – 12y + 9

= 22y2 – 3 × 2 × 2 × y + 32

= (2y – 3)2 (a)

Factorise n2 – 36

(a) n + 6

(b) (n – 6) (n + 6)

(c) n – 6

(d) 6 + n

Ans:

n2 – 36

= (n + 6) (n – 6) (b)

Question 8:

Find the factors of x2 – 11x + 28

(a) (x – 7)2

(b) (x + 4)2

(c) (x – 4) (x – 7)

(d) (x + 4) (x – 7)

Ans:

28 = (-7) × (-4) and (-7) + (-4) = -11

28 = 7 × 4 and 7 + 4 = 11

x2 – 11x + 28 = x2 – 7x – 4x + 28

= x (x – 7) – 4 (x – 7)

= (x – 4) (x – 7) (c)

 

Question 9:

Factorise 25m2 – 36n2

(a) 5m + 6n

(b) 5m – 6n

(c) (5m – 6n)2

(d) (5m + 6n (5m – 6n)

Ans:

25m2 – 36n2

= 52m2 – 62n2

(d) = (5m + 6n) (5m – 6n)

 

Question 10:

Factorise 6y2 + 2y + 3y3

(a) (2 + y)2

(b) (2 – y)3

(c) 2 + 3 (2 + y)

(d) y [2 + 3 (2 + y)]

Ans:

6y2 + 2y + 3y3

= (3 × 2 × y × y) + 2 × y + (3 × y × y × y)

= y (6y + 2 + 3y2)

= y [2 + 3 (2 + y)] (d)

 

Question 11:

9x2, 6xy find the common factor

(a) 2x

(b) 4x

(c) 3x

(d) 3x2

Ans

(c) 3x is the common factor.

 

Question 12:

Carry out the division 81 x2 y ÷ 9x

(a) x2 y

(b) 3x2 y

(c) 9x y

(d) 9x2 y

Ans:

81x2 y/9x = 9×9×x×x×y/9×x

(c) = 9xy

Find solution in x3 + 3x + 2 for x = 2

Ans:

x3 + 3x + 2 for x = 2

(2)3+ 3 × 2 + 2

8 + 6 + 2 = 16 (b)

Divide as directed

256 x2 – 169 y2 ÷ (16x – 13y)

If 40 y6 is a multiple of 4, where y is a digit, what might be the value of y?
