Expert Detectives Summary
‘Expert Detectives’ is a story by Sharada Dwivedi from “The Broken Flute”. The story is about a mysterious men & 2 small children named Nishad & his sister Maya. Their mother is a doctor who was treating Mr Nath (The mysterious man), who was Very polite & a silent man.
The 1st to 6th Para’s of the story, “As we walked . . . . . . Said firmly”, describes the discussion between the brother & the sister about Mr Nath. As both of them were walking back towards the clinic they looked like a monster according to Nishad. Mr Nath seemed to be a very lean & thin man as if he was poor & couldn’t afford to eat. They both were discussing if he was a bad man who had millions of rupees stored in his room. They were very doubtful about if Mr Nath was a criminal or not. Maya was very sure that Mr Nath was a bad man. Mr Mehta once told them that Ramesh brings him meal every day. Hearing this Nishant questioned that from where did he get money if he did not work. They both agreed that he had lots of money but came from because he did not work. Nishad couldn’t see the scars of Mr Nath because it was too dark. Nishad then said firmly that there were burn scars.
The 7th to 12th Para of the story “Perhaps the police . . . . . . tips well” mentions their continuation in the discussions regarding Mr Nath. Maya suggested that the police might have set fire to Mr Nath’s house to which Nishad looked unsure. On a Monday following their mother’s birthday Nishad along with his Mona went to the clinic where Maya was home with her school friend. When Maya came to know that he had met Mr Nath she got annoyed. Nishad knocked Mr Nath’s door & he open the door. Nishad was quiet upset with Mr Nath’s appearance. Nishad had also gifted him a bar of chocolate. Maya got exited & asked him if he could peek into Mr Nath’s trunck. Nishad disappointedly said that Mr Nath didn’t even ask him to come inside. Maya patked Nishad’s back for giving the information. Nishad further went to the restaurant & asked Ramesh about Mr Nath’s meal. He came to know that Mr Nath was not very particular about his meal but he surely gave Ramesh tips.
The 13th to 17th Para of the story “Ramesh told me . . . . . . before me” mentions their interest in knowing about Mr Nath. Nishad mentioned that Ramesh told a very strange thing. Every Sunday a tall, fair stout man comes to meet Mr Nath who also hardly speaks like Mr Nath. Maya seemed very impressed with the details & now they could sort the fact as detectives. But Nishad couldn’t agree & believe on Maya so that Mr Nath was a criminal. Maya to his reportedly said that criminal’s look as quiet ordinary people. The next day the school was about to open but the monsoons had broke and it was heavily raining & thunder storm bursted in making it a holiday. Maya thought of utilizing her time. She sat in the desk with a pen & paper.
Part (II)
The 1st 8 to 10th “I wrote in . . . . . anything, seven”? Mentions the facts both brother & sister had noticed about Mr Nath Maya was busy writing the facts & she even asked Nishad if he would listen to the points to which he agreed. The nine facts they noticed were, firstly they wanted to know the first name of Mr Nath. Secondly the other tenants at Shankar house find Mr Nath to be a mad & strange man. Thirdly people find him unfriendly & mannerless to which Nishad could not agree. Nishad told that Mr Nath spoke to Maya & their mom to which Maya retorted that he was polite only because he was Maya & Nishad’s mom’s patient.
The fourth point which they noticed was Mr Nath never received any letters to which Nishad nodded. Fifthly Mr Nath had been staying in the Room 10 of Shankar house from last 1 year. Sixthly Mr Nath does not work & stays at his room the whole day. The noted down were that even kids & some grownups were scared of Mr Nath, he did not have any visitors other than a spectacled fair fat man who visited Mr Nath on Sunday for lunch. Lastly the 9th fact she noted was that Ramesh took his meals tea from the restaurant downstairs. He didn’t care about his meals but paid his bills & tips regularly. After finishing her list she asked seven if she missed out something.
The 8th to 12th Para “Nishad . . . . . please tell me?” describes their further discussion on the points Maya had noted about Mr Nath. Nishad did not pay attention to the points but he felt pity for Mr Nath as he was lonely. But Maya believed that he was a criminal & a criminal cannot have friends. Nishad suddenly recalled he had a friend who comes to meet him a thought that the fair spectacled man must have been the partners in crime & came now & then to give Mr Nath his share.
Nishad got angry & was not ready to accept Mr Nath as a criminal because he regular used to tip Ramesh that means he had a good heart. The discussion was becoming an argument. Between the two Maya felt that Ramesh knew something Mr Nath’s past & so he bribed Ramesh to keep quiet. Nishad glazed at Maya angrily. Nishad was not ready to accept Mr Nath as a criminal & even warned Maya that he would not include himself in the investigations until Maya stops regarding Mr Nath as a criminal. They both started arguing. Maya got angry on Nishad Maya angrily said if Mr Nath was not something a character of doubt that what was the idea of bothering him.
The last three Para 13th, 14th, 15th end the story “Nishad looked . . . . . . on him at all”? This lines conclude their discussion as Nishad wanted to discover the reason why he was so kin & thin & had no friends Maya then explained him he lived in Shankar’s house for a year but still couldn’t make friends. Mr Nath had a fear that he will be recognised and handed over to the cops. Nishad could not agree with Maya & wanted to make friends, with Mr Nath. Maya was surprised warned him that he would even be caught by cops for being the friend of a criminal Nishad just could not take it anymore & went to the others room.
