Introduction: Youth unrest is the collective demonstration of frustration by the youth in the society. “Unrest” is defined as a state of turmoil and disturbances. It is a state of disillusionment and dissatisfaction. Youth unrest is an issue of serious concern of our society. Nowadays youth are involved in many social problems, either directly or indirectly. The youths try to reset various disoriented norms in society for which they engage in conflicts against the authority. After independence, few names of youth unrest are All Assan Student’s Union agitation and the Anti-Mandal agitation. If the students of a particular university protests that is not termed as youth unrest. If students from all universities of all across the country agitates over a common issue that can be called youth unrest.
Causes of Youth Unrest: The social scenario at presents breeds agitation and frustration among the youth. Unemployment, education system, political corruption, admission procedure, value differences, are few of the many issues that lead the youth to held protests against the authority or the government. 21-35 is the age group which is very vital as it paves the path for an individual to gather experience and make suitable decisions. During this phase, a youth might encounter several social evils which hinders him from achieving his goal. For this he becomes frustrated and starts revolts. The causes of youth unrest are as follows:
- Disoriented socialization and family problems: The parents fail to bring up their children in accordance with the society’s culture, due to which the youth’s go astray. Also, family problems affected the mental health of the growing youth.
- Political and social inequalities: The youth have a strong contempt of the existing political and social system. So, they are always up to condemn the existing system. They are frustrated and disillusioned about the happenings and they become cynical towards their future.
- Defective Education System: The current education system does not fulfill the criteria of getting a well- paid job. The disoriented, traditional and improper educational system cannot make the youth serene and disciplined.
- Unemployment: The education received does not provide economically self-sufficient jobs to the youth. Moreover, the government fails to suit the employment need of the youths.
- Politicians misusing student power: Some unscrupulous politicians make use of youth power to satisfy their political interests. Youth becomes puppets in the hands of the politicians and satiate their selfish demands.
- Lack of communication: Communication gap between students and teachers lead to youth unrest. Also, parents fail to understand what their children want. This also cause resentment among youth.
- Differences of values: The youth are rationalistic in their nature and pragmatic in their approach. They oppose the old values and cultures and try to establish the new.
Solutions of youth unrest: The possible solutions of student unrest are as follows:
- Introducing moral values in the curriculum of schools right from the primary classes. Discipline shall be taught and ways to control anger shall also be taken into view.
- The parents should teach their children to accommodate and adjust in all kinds of situations. Patience and perseverance shall be instilled in them. Their demands shall not be given undue importance which take the form of protests and strikes in future.
- The college and the university authorities must figure out the student’s problems and provide probable solutions to it. This will hinder unrests and unnecessary protests.
- The Vice- Chancellor, the principal shall take decisions regarding student’s well-being with the consent of the students. Every class shall have a class representative who will act as a mediator between the authority and the students.
- The institution should arrange for youth counselling sessions after the occurrence of any strike or protests. The counsellor can guide the youth regarding their decisions and can suggest possible remedies.
- The university and the school authorities shall accept the youth’s views and opinions regarding any issue. It should not take any immediate decision. A notice shall have to be put up stating the cause of any decision making.
Conclusion: Youth unrest will keep on happening so long as their demands are not met and their needs are not looked after. Many has a wrong notion that it is the nature of the youth to fight over trivial matters. Youth have sensitive mind which needs to be dealt with proper care. Unrest and resentment can be stopped if the youth are guided and their views are given importance.
