Youth Culture refers to the norms and living standards shared by young people that are different from those of their parents and adults of the society. A difference in taste for food, clothes, music, vocabulary makes the youth distinct from other people. The youths in the present days tries to transform their nation with their thoughts, behaviors, food habits, dressing sense, passions and actions. They are not likely to pay heed to what the others will say. This implies the notion of – Who Cares that has developed among the youths. The youths mainly lack in patience and adopt new flavors of life. As a result of this, they might turn out to be aggressive.
Who- cares concept of the youth:
Youths are gregarious in nature. They communicate with one another and share their thoughts and ideas. In the process of doing so, they might develop jovial relations or become foes. They override the decisions and opinions of their guardians, parents and teachers. They become impatient over petty issues and start revolting. One of such instances is youth unrest. In colleges and universities, youths start revolting against the administration when their demands are not taken care of. Instead of discussing with the management, they hold protest march to raise the issue. For the slightest of disputes, they resort to protests. Youths dress up the way they want to. They are influenced by the latest fashion trends. Wearing ripped trousers, skinny clothes have become a fashion. Getting piercings and tattoos in certain parts describes the taste of youth. The electronic media play a major role in this. Most Indians are influenced by the western culture. Using slangs in front of adults, smoking in public places by them shows lack of reverence for the adults.Taking drugs, consuming alcohol shows disobedience towards the elders. Visiting nightclubs for entertainment reflects their “who care” attitude. Public display of affection in some countries is not socially acceptable as in India. But youths in India are seen sometimes engaging in public display of affection with their partners. This may create an obscene situation in public but the youth simply flout the norms due to their – who care attitude.
Effects of ‘who-care’ attitude:
The ‘who-care’ attitude of youth culture has some serious consequences on the youth. Most of them have become participants in juvenile delinquency. The delinquent acts such as truancy, fighting, vandalism, trespassing, rape, petty theft are the effects of the who-care attitude of the youths. Cases of early pregnancy and abortion are the malicious effects of early indulgence in sex. As a result of this, youths cannot have a career of their own, they fail to fulfil their ambitions and continue to plunge into the abyss of darkness.

It is the ‘who-care’ attitude that is destroying the youth culture. They flout the opinion and advice of their elders and indulge in activities mostly to please their hearts.Youth should make proper use of technology and follow the positive aspects of modernization and westernization. They should shed off the ‘who-care’ attitude and seek advice from their elders who can show them the right path. Keeping in view, the dos and don’ts set by the societal norms, they should act accordingly. Then only, the youths can make themselves, their family, and the nation proud.
