As a democracy, India shelters several diverse voices in the country that becomes a hindrance to the progression of the country., Issues such pertaining to socio-cultural problems like rape and molestation against women have risen unprecedented. For instance, the students of Delhi University and Jawaharlal Nehru Unniversity(JNU) were fundamental in organising mass protests against the Nirbhaya Gang Rape in Delhi 2012. Similar to the Nirbhaya case, the youth of Chennai protested in Marina beach to seek justice for Jallikattu. Youth has major contributions in the economic growth of the country with young entrepreneurs like Ritesh Agarwal founder of OYO Rooms in 2013. The World Values Survey stated that the proportion of youth interested in Politics accounts for a mere 15%.. This led to the development of student wings of major political parties such as India Youth Congress, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and Democratic Youth Federation of India(YFI)The Young India Foundation has been working relentlessly to spread awareness about the rights of youth. The YFI has also campaigned for the decrease in parliamentary candidacy from the age of 25 to a lower age. Tejaswi Surya, Tejaswi Yadav, Aditya Thackeray are some of India’s emerging youth politicians with RishabMukati the youngest politician rising up their respective party ranks. Despite youth’s major contribution in social, economic and political aspects, unchecked power of youth can have negative impacts on society. For instance drug trade and drug use in Punjab have been a major social issue where 20.8% of youth were engaged in using drugs. Misguided youths had also joined the islamic militant groups and left wing extremist factions leading to misuse of youth power.

India, with a youth population that accounts for 55% in the range of 16-55 years, has a major advantage over countries such as the United States of America, Japan and Germany. In the developed nations the average is estimated to be 40, 47 and 46 in USA, European countries and Japan respectively as compared to India’s average of 29. As far as economic dividend is concerned, Indian youth like Ritesh Agarwal and Peyush Bansal have founded their own companies such as OYO Rooms and Lenskart not only improving the economy of the nation but also generating employment.
