Introduction: A type of video game that is played with the help of internet is termed as online games. With the advent of internet, online games have gained paramount importance in the lives of many students, mostly teenagers. According to World Health Organization (WHO), online games create disorders in students due to their addiction to it. As a result of this addictive behavior, they indulge themselves in gambling, drugs and alcohol instead of studying and engaging in other co-curricular activities. They also get diverted from familial engagements due to their addictive behaviors. They communicate less with others and focus more on gaming. They find an escape from reality and imbibe themselves in the virtual world of games from where they learn nothing. Students should engage in sports and other physical activities instead of playing online games.
Types of online games: The five major types of online games that students should not be allowed to play are:
- Roblox: An online game platform that allows many students to interact with one another thereafter asking them to indulge in a sexual role play. Its full of pedophiles causing harm to the students.
- Blue whale: This online game dares a player to participate in a wide variety of daring tasks. It can even go to the extent of forcing a gamer to commit suicide. The tasks may include watching horror movies all day long, harming oneself with a knife, etc.
- Fire fairy: This online game pranks on young children about how to become a fire fairy. Reports say that a young five-year-old child has suffered burns on her body as she tried to become a fire fairy.
- The Letter “X”: This online game is a form of cyber bullying and can force a student to commit suicide. The users of this game hurl insult at oneanother. This could be body shaming in terms of height, weight, personality.
- Momo: The Momo is a horror game where the users will be assigned a series of deadly tasks. The user may go to the extreme limit of committing suicide as ordered by the admin. This game is similar to blue whale.
Reasons for preventing students from playing online games: Online gaming is detrimental to the physical and mental health of the students. Without studying, students indulge themselves in the world of online games. They also deprive themselves of their hobbies in order to play online games. They communicate less with their friends and family members. This results in poor academic performance and so they become school or college dropouts. It also leads to lack of concentration and even face memorizing problems. Students’ creativity also gets impeded due to playing online games. They become lethargic in performing any kind of activity in their day-to-day life.
Measures to prevent students from playing online games: Guardians and parents should restrict the time of using mobile phones and laptops for their children. They should supervise the websites they are using and have access to whichever passwords their children are using for any kind of apps or websites. Parents should encourage their children to study and spend leisure time by indulging in story book reading, co-curricular activities and other sports.
Conclusion: Keeping all the above causes in mind, students should be debarred from playing online games. The time of mobile usage should be restricted. And even they are playing any online games, parents have to be sure that they are not detrimental to the child’s physical and mental health. Student life is the best phase of life to learn, grow, develop skills and explore fruitful ideas. Therefore, playing online games have to be replaced with worthwhile activities so that they grow up to be successful and good human beings.
