Proponents of a free college education have opined that bringing down the tuition fee of a college education will strengthen the skilled labour force of the country. The education fee can be compensated once the students are employed. On the contrary professional courses, opponents are of the opinion that college courses pertaining to Information technology and Engineering courses are expensive as they require proper infrastructure costing a bulk amount. It is an obstacle to free college education as there is no guaranteed return on investments. The drop rate of Indian college students is one out of eight enrolled students according to the National Statistical Office. It discourages authorities of both public and private colleges to provide free college education schemes.

Despite the urgent need for students belonging to rural areas of the country, the possibility of a free college education seems to be a distant dream. While free college education is not a plausible reality, the Central and state governments had initiated scholarship schemes for college students. The National Scholarship scheme provides monetary aid to meritorious students belonging to families with an annual income of less than Rs.6 lakh. It is distributed equally between 41000 men and women pursuing graduate and postgraduate degrees. All India  Council for Technical Education (AICTE) grants scholarship programmes to all women pursuing technical courses under the Pragati programme. Four Thousand scholarships are provided to women each year.

To surmise, college education especially technical courses like Data science and professional courses like Master of Business Administration are expensive owing to expensive infrastructure and lack of skilled trainers in the country. The government of India does not have the resources to provide free university education as there is no guarantee of returns on investment. Most students migrate to foreign countries like Canada and England in search of better job opportunities that hinder governments from investing in free college education.
