Lucknow Essay: Lucknow the capital of Uttar Pradesh is located in northern India. It is positioned at the centre of the state on the banks of the Gomati River almost about 45 miles northeast of Kanpur. This city gained its prominence in 1528 when the Mughal ruler of India Babur conquered and captured it. Lucknow has become part of the Oudh Province under the rule of Babur’s grandson Akbar. Also, the city is located at the junction of multiple roads and rail lines. The Chaudhury Charan Singh International Airport is located about 10 km southwest of the central city.

Discussion

Lucknow contains some exemplary examples of architecture. The Great Imambara is a famous single-storeyed structure where the Muslims assembled to celebrate Muharram together. In addition, the Turkish Gate or the Rumi Darwaza was built following the Sublime Port at Istanbul. Another preserved monument is the Residency which served as the scene of the defence troops during the time of the Indian mutiny.

Among the educational universities, is the University of Lucknow, the Central Drug Research Insititute, the music academy, an institute of Muslim theology, an arts and crafts college and the state museum. The average literacy rate in Lucknow is 82.50 per cent of which the male literacy rate is 66.04 per cent and the female literacy rate is 78.70 per cent.

Lucknow is a populous city and the current estimated population of Lucknow in 2023 is 3,884,000. In addition, the city draws a large number of tourists every year. This city of Nawabs is also famous for its food. The most famous places of Lucknow are the kebabs comprising the tundey kebab, galouti kebab, biryani comprising the handi and the Awadhi biriyani to name a  few. Other than these are the basket chaat, the most flavourful tangy chaat to satiate every taste bud. Kulcha Nihari, malai Makhan, chole bhature, sheermal,  kebab paratha, and Kulfi faluda are some of the best foods that one must try while being here.

Lucknow is also famous for its traditional chikankari embroidery. Chiknanakari refers to the embroidery work which is done with white cotton thread on a fine white cotton cloth. In other words, chikankari is also known as shadow work. Women, mostly engage themselves in these profession of threading and knitting.  The Chikan work in Lucknow is as old as 200 years and later on, it was patronised by the Nawabs. In Lucknow, there are alsmot 5000 families who have engaged themselves in chikankari embroidery. The artisans mainly belong to the Muslim community and people who visit Lucknow never fail to buy themselves pieces of Lucknow chikankari embroidery work.

To conclude, it can be said that, Lucknow is one of the most beautiful cities in Inida that is adorned with rich and beautiful historical monuments. In addition, it has captured a hundred years of rich glory. The city is famous for its ancient remains, civic structures, bridges, gardens, architecture and landscape. Furthermore, the city is famous for its lip-smacking food. Owing to the rich culture, art and architecture and food, the city never fails to attract tourists.
