Essay – Intolerance
Intolerance Essay: Intolerance refers to the disbelief or the change in a state of mind with regard to a particular caste, creed, nation or religion in society. In other words, intolerance is very destructive and disturbing in nature as a person is reluctant to respect, accept and value the opinion or belief systems. Hatred towards one another, discrimination and crime ensue from intolerance. Hence intolerance is regarded as the act that gives a person the right to detest or refuse another person’s belief or mind. It is a transgression which causes the nation, society or country to wage war against one another. One such instance is the intolerance between Palestine and the Jews which can give rise to violence.
Discussion
One of the most common forms of intolerance is religious intolerance which means when a religious group or non-religious group refuses to abide by or accept the values and norms of other religious or non-religious groups. Furthermore, when a group or a society criticises or disregards the fact of secularism poised by the other group. It is known by all that religions promote peace and harmony in society. However, due to political and economical turmoil, religious riots and intolerance take place in India. In addition, religious texts or the scriptures also bear the capacity to wage a war.
Another form of intolerance is sexism which implies poorly treating people because of their gender. Men, women and transgender experience sexism. India still experiences sexism whereby women are taught to be subservient in many patriarchal families. Given the progress made by the Indian feminist, women in rural areas still face discrimination. The third gender also faces discrimination in getting access to education, public amenities and employment in India despite the Supreme Court saying that this gender will be inclusive gender.
Homophobia is the most common form of intolerance which implies unfairly treating a person because he is either gay or lesbian. Another effect of homophobia is sexually harassing a person because of his/her interest towards the same sex.
Ageism is another form of intolerance whereby the person is poorly treated because he/she is ageing. For instance, maltreating older parents and sending thm to old age homes to rid them of their burden. In addition, addressing an older person by using offensive names is another example of ageism in India.
Treating someone in an inappropriate way because of their skin colour is another example of intolerance, known as racism. For instance, not allowing blacks to associate with whites is an example of racism. Even the British were racists whereby they did not allow the Indians to enter their clubs.
Conclusion
To conclude, it can be said that, strict laws are necessary for fighting intolerance related to sexism, religious issues, ageism, homophobia and racism. The Indian Supreme Court has formulated laws to prevent intolerance. Intolerance is a serious crime that has the full potential to petrify a nation, religious group, society and human beings. Thus there is an immediate need to put an end to all the forms of intolerance that prevail in society.
