International women’s day is observed every year on 8th of march to celebrate women and to recognize and appreciate their role and efforts to improve our societies, our communities and our personal and professional lives. The celebration aims to promote women rights and gender balance around the world. On this day we celebrate the exceptional achievements of the women in various fields like science, technology, medicine, education.
The UN had proclaimed the year 1975 as International Women’s Year and since that year the UN began celebrating the international women’s day. In 1977, the UN General Assembly invited its member to proclaim March 8 as an official UN holiday for women’s rights and world peace and hence from 1977, march 8 has been celebrated annually by the UN and much of the world as women’s day with a particular theme every year. All across the globe various events, marches or campaigns are organised.
Woman are one of the species in this world after God that create life, “they are the real architects of the society” as quoted by Harriet Beecher Stowe. They are the reason we all exist and we also learn our initial teachings form them. They play various roles in our life like that of a daughter, a sister, a wife, a mother. Even though they naturally are so important they have been given very less importance in our societies and our communities since the old times. They are treated in an inferior way as compared to men, given less opportunities than men and they have to struggle more as compared to their opposite gender for same opportunities. Even in 21st century women are considered to just produce offspring for men and serve the needs of men. Even in their professional lives if they seek growth they are sexually harassed or preyed on by their seniors. Even some educated people are of the opinion thatwomen are not capable of high-leveland important positions. People treat women related issues as no big deal.
However, over the years of protest, various campaign, awareness created by various organizations and celebration of women’s day have resulted in some positives changes in the society.Overcoming various hardships and obstacles now the opinions and voices of women arebeing heard, they are now excelling in all fields from farms to sports fields, from panchayats to presidentship, from schools to armed forces and entrepreneurship and even in fields which were never even open for them before. Women are nowheading organizations from top positions and serving as examples for all of us.They are contributing at all levels for the growth of the country and are competing as same level as all men.
As aware citizens we have to put efforts and to make sure we provide women a safe environment. We have to listen to their voices to solve their problems so that they don’t feel as they are alone. We have to strive for complete gender equality. Let’s hope we achieve a world in near future where everyone is equal.
