India is country of diverse cultures and tradition that has been prospering for decades. Our nation has the world’s oldest culture that started about 4,000 years ago.  India has the worlds’ colossal culture and traditions as people of different religion, having different cultures, food habits, clothing, linguistic backgrounds reside here. Each 28 states in India are distinct and unique in their own way in terms of having rich culture and heritage. Foreigners from all across the across visit India and has developed an awe and reverence for its remarkable tradition and culture. Owing to secularism, India promotes brotherhood among different religions namely Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism and Zoroastrianism. All these religions have their own culture, tradition, food habits, clothing, art, festivals and rituals. Among all nations of the world, India has qualified to emerge as a prosperous nation having incredible culture and traditions.

Culture and tradition of India:

India is a holy place for most of the native religions like Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, Islam and Christianity.  Hindus, Jains, Buddhists by and large believe in idol worshipping. Whereas a few sects of Buddhist, Islam and Christians do not believe in idol worshipping. Hindus and Buddhist believe in karma, rebirth and moksha. Buddhists practice ahimsa whereas Hindus and Muslims do not preach so.In India it is our culture to touch feet of elders to seek blessings and greet one another with folded hands. Unlike the western countries, Indians have the tradition to stay in joint families.Members in joint families participate in festivals together and help one another in times of crisis. However, in joint families, the tradition of sharing the same dining table by all the family members hasdisintegrated in modern times. Indians follow the tradition to believe in the position of stars and planets for predicting their future.  They are ardent followers of astrology. Marriages are held with the consent of elderly member in the families who seek helps of astrologers for evaluating the horoscopes of the bride and the groom.

The official language of India is Hindi. Apart from these, the 28 states have different linguistic backgrounds. Tamil, Telegu, Marathi, Konkani, Bengali, Oriya, Assamese to name a few.  The culinary tradition of India is marked by assortment of spices, herbs in variety of food items. Indians consume cereals, pulses, chapattis, desserts, condiments, sweets.  Many Hindus are vegetarian, like Marathi and Gujrati whereas other Hindus consume chicken, mutton, fish. Indian women mostly drape sarees, men wear dhoti and kurta or they pair kurta with pajamas.

India is well known for its remarkable art and architecture. Rulers of different religions having nuances of cultures and traditions have reigned over thousands of years in India. As for instance, Taj Mahal, one of the seven wonders was built by a Muslim ruler Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz.  Chittorgarh was built by Maharana Kumbha, a Hindu ruler to commemorate his triumph over Allaudin Khilji.

The web of India is intricately knitted with culture and traditions. The rich culture and tradition represent the identity of every Indian. It instills moral values and ethics in us and makes our nation vibrant laced with extravagance. The culture and the tradition are passed from one generation o the other generation and this is an on-going process. Our culture and tradition reflect our thinking, behavior and shapes our personality. By following the right culture and traditions our nation can progress in future and stand out best among all the other nations if the world.
