Essay on India As A Soft State for Class 10, 12, Mains Exam (UPSC, PSC, SSC)
Gunnar Myrdal first introduced the term ‘soft state’ in his Asian Drama whereby he meant lenient attitude of the South Asian countries in comparison to the European countries. The soft state does not take hard decisions even if the situation demands. The country having a soft state weakens the potentiality to enforce any law. The inability to take hard decisions increases violence, corruption and crime rate in the country. Since the post-independence period, India follows a soft state policy due to the destruction of the local powers. India failed to maintain its integrity for being a secular state. The national interests were not protected by India on several occasions. So, India can be regarded as a soft state.
Is India really a soft state?
Indians are basically very generous. They follow the path shown by Mahatma Gandhi that is tolerance and ahimsa due to which they usually do not engage in fights against others. India is really a soft state in so far as the matters of crime are concerned. India failed to combat terrorism in many cases. India was late in responding to the Kargil attack in the 20th century. We have seen the case when the Indian government delayed in punishing Kasab even though the video footages of him were prominent. India has not been competent in international trade and hence the brilliant brains are outsourced by the foreign companies. The United Nations is one of the leading importers of the Indian brains and is one of the emerging economies of the world. The Indian economy is governed by many Us multinational companies as India fails to implement proper economic policies, programme and enforcement of law. India has failed to deal with the threats coming from the enemies. In India, poverty still dominates over prosperity. Indians still think that China is a developing country like India, but the case is not so. China stands after US in terms of military and defence. The world’s currency market is ruled by China. However, by discarding article 370, and demonetization, Narendra Modi had taken the face-off challenge with China which is illustrative of the fact that India is no longer a soft state. India has been trying to settle the border dispute with China since the early 1990s without success. The border stretches from Ladakh in the north to Sikkim in the north-east covering an area of 3,500 kilometers. This historical glitch was corrected by the Indian army guided by our Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the year 2019. Ladakh was declared a federal territory which got separated from Kashmir that brought an end to the semi- autonomous status. Abolition of article 370, provided special status to Jammu and Kashmir allowing them enjoy prosperity and privilege. Black money crippled the healthy economic relations. In 2016, the high value currency notes were demonetized by the BJP government. Demonetization, curtailed the black money and prevented the use of faked cash to fund terrorism and other illegal activities.
Conclusion:
Though India faces many shortcomings, yet it is trying its best to rise from the sate of soft to hard state. Hard decisions with optimist outcomes are taken by the present government has far reaching effects and all are being done for the benefit of the nation and its people.
