Discussion

Female foeticide happens all over India, from rural villages to urbanised cities. Although the government has taken steps to lower the rate of female foeticide with the implementation of acts such as the Pre conception and pre Natal Diagnostics Techniques Act, of 1994, sex determination still continues in some remote areas. Female foeticide is the outcome of gender biasedness which discriminates against women and regards them to be less valuable than men. Be it in the economic or social field, women are less prioritised than men.

Girls are regarded as a financial burden by the parents and thus the latter consider that spending money on the girl child will be useless because they will be sent to the in-laws’ house after their marriage. As stated in Hindu mythology, boys can bring fortune to the family and paves the pathways to heaven.  Unaware and illiterate people, trapped in such ideas, take part in the heinous crime of female foeticide.  The advancement of technology is another cause of female foeticide because sex determination is possible because of ultrasound.  Corruption is another factor because the doctors engage themselves in the act because of satisfying their money desires.

The consequences of female foeticide are not at all pleasing. There has been a sharp decrease in the female population because of the abrupt killing of the female foetus. Girls trafficking is also increasing because they are regarded as unwanted by their families. With the decrease in the number of girls, male chauvinism is on the rise. There are many instances of female foeticide in India.  For instance, the polyandrous Toda tribe of the Nilgiris practised female foeticide which led to a demographic imbalance. To address this issue the government shall put a ban on the easy availability of sex determination tests and abortion. Those found guilty of the issue shall be subjected to lifetime imprisonment and any medical institute engaged in these acts shall get their license terminated.

Conclusion

To conclude it can be said that it is the responsibility of the government to launch campaigns to create awareness among the people to save their girl child. NGOs can also come ahead and voice their opinion against the bane of sex determination and female foeticide. Girls shall be allowed to borne, get educated, become self-dependent and live life exactly the way they want to. They shall be given unfettered access to rights as a man has, then only our nation can succeed.
