India is a country with composite culture where every religion, culture, customs, traditions is looked upon with respect. It is known to be a country of diversity for which it holds an important position among all nations of the world. People of different communities migrated to India, settled down and spread their beliefs, ideologies and living practices with which our views got intermingled. In due course of time, new cultures had born in various states of India. This led to the growth of composite culture i.e., the co-existence of various cultures in one particular region. Our country is tolerant towards accepting various cultures and so India stands 9th in the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report under the natural and cultural resources category.

Religion:

People of several religions – Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist, Sikh, Parsi, Christian resides in India. The religion preaches to be tolerant towards other religions, non-violence, benevolence, salvation and service to humanity. The teaching of every religion depends on the concept of karma and dharma. The Turkish invasion introduced Islam in India and Christianity was introduced by Bartholomew and Thomas. Religions unite people when they celebrate festivals together.

Family structure of Indian society:

India has a tradition of living in joint families. The household comprise of parents, grandparents, cousins, uncles and aunts. The eldest member is considered to be the head of the family who takes decisions on almost all matters. A person who grows up in the joint family make him or her more gregarious in nature. But in the recent past the concept of joint families no longer exist and the nuclear families came into existence. This is mostly due to the interference of the elder members in the next generations.

Institution of marriage:

Marital engagements are widely celebrated occasions in India. The concept of arrange marriage is prevalent in our country. Marriage take place with the consent of the elder members of the family. Over the years the Indian families have become much more tolerant in accepting love marriages. The love marriage may comprise of inter-caste and inter-religion marriage. The practice of dowry system is mostly observed in Hindu marriages and triple talaq is observed in Muslim marriage.However, these two evils have come to an end in the recent times.

Clothing:

Each ethnicity that resides from east to west and from north to south has its own taste of clothing fashion. Men mostly wear dhoti, kurta, lungi and pajama. Women wear sarees and salwar kameez of different prints and colors. With the advent of globalization, shirts, trousers, skirts, dresses have made their way into the Indian wardrobe. Many pair ethic outfit with Indian wear to create a new look.

Cuisine:

Indian cuisine has gained spectacular importance across the world.  The cuisine has both taste and nutrition and one can enjoy a wide variety of it. To name a few, Hyderabad’s biriyani, Mumbai’s pav bhaji, West Bengal’s roshogolla, Rajasthan’s dal bati churma, Goa’s Sea food, Agra’s petha, Delhi’s chat and the list continues to go on.

Literature, music and art:

Hindi is the national language of India and there are 22 languages spoken in 720 dialects. Indian classical music has gained prominence over centuries and inspired other sub genres of music. The sculptors and artists have presented their creativity in the for of art. Cave paintings of Ajanta, Taj Mahal in Agra, Konark temple in Orissa, Tawang Monastery in Arunachal Pradesh are some examples.

Conclusion:

Disharmony created due to communal riots have tried to break the Indian unity but it could not succeed in its mission. Indians stood united and robust and tried to retain its composite culture. India, being a democratic country will continue to follow its composite culture and share the pride of national identity.
