Emerging threats to India’s internal security Essay : India is the largest democracy in the world with a total population of 1.417 billion in 2022. Since its rise as a major global economic power in 1991, after a period of maintaining an isolated economy, India has new threats to deal with. India’s overall exports (Merchandise and Services combined) in October 2022 account for an estimated to be USD 58.36 Billion. India faces a wide array of challenges to its internal security that include not only traditional military and nuclear threats, but a vast type of threats such as terrorism, cyber security, and other demographic challenges.
Discussion
The new threats that are posed against India are discussed below as follows:
i) Cyber-threats: The Digital India Movement that began in 2015 has brought about a paradigm shift in terms of communication and connectivity. Greater connectivity has improved wider services such as communication and it also led to the emergence of new threats. Major companies in energy like ONGC and GAIL (India) and finance HDB Finance Services and Bajaj Finance Ltd. are targeted by new-age cyber criminals. The CERT-IN states that cybercrime was reported every 10 minutes in India in 2017.
ii) Climate Change as an Instability Threat: One of the major threats concerning India’s internal security is climate change and its impact. Depleting freshwater resources has resulted in many inter-state water conflicts such as the Kaveri row between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka on 22 August 2016. Domestic conflicts of such kind disturb internal administration drastically.
iii) Novel form of Terrorism: The new form of terrorist attack known as the lone wolf terrorist attack is a leaderless form of terrorism. While India was immune to such forms of attacks until recent years, the beheading of Kanhaiya Lal Teli in Udaipur by prime accused Md. Riwaz Akhtari and Ghaus Md. took the country by storm. The lone wolf terrorism form is devoid of terrorist boundaries and recognition of any sovereignty. They use tactics such as sleeper cells network, suicide bombers and sophisticated technology. The unprecedented terrorism poses India’s internal security with difficult challenges.
iv) Demographicalterations and their consequences: India is witnessing a huge demographic dividend in terms of 65% population in the age group of 15-35 years. As such India becomes the largest nation with the highest human resources in youth. It is of great economic advantage to the nation provided that the youth get sufficient employment opportunities. Lack of opportunities in employment may push the youth to crime which is a major societal threat to the country.
The advent of technological threats: While the availability of new technology testifies to the scientific progress of a nation, it is a necessary evil in our country. The indiscriminate use of transparency cameras and robotics resulted in the rise of cyber crimes. For instance, the use of drones by Pakistan enabled them to sneak information about our country to their advantage. The drone was recently fired down in Rajasthan.
Conclusion
To surmise, India faces varied forms of security challenges that are unprecedented in nature. To solve the novel internal security threats India needs to adapt clinical strategies. It is crucial to combine our diplomatic, economic, political, social and military prowess. The creation of the National Cyber Security Co-ordinator, Cyber Swachta Kendra and Khelo India initiatives to tackle the new internal security threats.
