Element:
Element can be defined as the matter which can not be split up into simpler substance called as element.
Examples : Hydrogen (H) ,Helium (He), Carbon (C)
There are 118 elements present in the periodic table which is sorted by their atomic number (Z) . In these 118 elements 92 elements are occur in nature and other are artificially made in laboratory.
Types of elements
Elements are generally classified into two types metals and non metals.
Metals : metals have malleability, ductility, conductivity of heat and electricity, density and lustre .
Eg. copper, aluminium ,gold, silver ,zinc.
Non metals : non metals does not show malleability, ductility, conductivity of heat and electricity, density, and lustre.
Eg. Hydrogen, carbon, phosphorus, nitrogen, fluorine .
Symbol:
Symbol of element defined as the abbreviations used for each chemical element .
Normally when symbol consist of two letters , first letter is always capital alphabet another is small alphabet . chemical symbols are understood internationally when element names require translation.
Examples : Helium ( He)
First letter is ‘H’ is capital .
Second letter is ‘e’ is small.
Use of symbol
Symbols are useful to identify elements and atoms in a chemical formula easily.
