EVMs are being manufactured by Bharat Electronics Ltd. And Electronic Corporation of India, which consists of 2 units the control unit and the balloting unit. The balloting unit enables the person to cast his vote by pressing the required voting button, while the control unit records the country and displays the number votes casted in digital format.
The EVMs have replaced the old forms of ballot paper system of voting and has facilitated in quick counting of votes and providing quick election results. It has also reduced the cost borne on staff required for manual counting of votes. It has also reduced the time required in casting votes. It also saves paper and electricity as these machines are battery operated and do not require electricity. Thus facilitating uninterrupted voting. This has also increased the security in voting system as the EVMs comes with chip system making it impossible to replace the EVMs a for prevents fraud.
Besides these advantages the EVMs have been said to be vulnerable to hacking, this could disrupt the voting system and not produce fair election results. At times the software used can also be altered in order to produce altered election results. Certain censors in the machines can be damaged or disrupted during transportation which may again cause loss of data or invalid results. Voting Machines are being stored until the results are declared, these need to be kept in highly protected safe lockers so that they cannot be destroyed or tampered. Many physically challenged and other illiterate persons find it difficult to cast their votes for their selective candidates as the names of parties are written in English, so they have to rely or either remember the symbols of their selective party to cast their votes. The data stored into the control systems could be vulnerable to viruses as well thereby affecting the voting system.
Besides these limitations, till today EVMs have been most relied upon when it comes to voting machines, making it cost effective and quick result declaration.
