ICSE Class 10 Chemistry Case Study based questions – Electrolysis
On this page we have given ICSE Class 10 Chemistry Chapter 6 Case Study based questions – Electrolysis. From 2024 Board exam, ICSE will focus on Technical Based, Analytical Based and Critical Questions in Chemistry Exam. So we Net Ex, has started giving Case Study based questions which is also known as Paragraph Based Questions.
Que No. 1 –
Analyze the above figure and answer following questions.
1.) What do you understand by electrolytic cell ?
2.) Give any two examples of electrochemical cell.
3.) What happened when current is turn on and it flows through cathode and anode ?
Que No. 2 –
Based on the ease with which atoms of metals lose electrons to form positively charged ions, the metals are arranged in a series known as the electrochemical series.
1.) Arrange the following metal atoms in series according to electrochemical series .
K,Al,Mg,Ca,Zn,Na,Fe
2.) Write the cations of the following metal atoms :
1) Al 2)Ni 3)Cu 4)Hg 5)Pt
3.) Why hydrogen placed in electrochemical series even if it is not metal atom ?
Que No. 3 –
Analyze the above figure and answer following questions.
1.) What is the diagram is about ?
2.) Write the chemical reactions shown at cathode and anode?
3.) Which chemical used as electrolyte in above process?
4.) What is the need for coating of nickel on metal surface, explain ?

1.) Electrolytic cell is a non- conducting vessel containing two electrodes immersed in a solution of electrolytes used to bring about a chemical reaction. Electrolytic cells require an outside source of electricity (DC source) to initiate the movement of ions between two electrodes where the chemical change takes place. It converts electrical energy into chemical energy.
2.) Simple voltaic cell and Daniel cell are the examples of electrochemical cell.
3.) When the current is turned on, electrons flow from anode to cathode. The cathode becomes the negative electrode by which electrons enter the electrolyte and the anode becomes the positive electrode by which electrons leave the electrolyte.
Que No. 2 Answers-
1.) Arrangements of metal atoms according to electrochemical series are as follows:
1) K 2) Ca 3) Na 4) Mg 5) Al 6) Zn 7) Fe
2.) Metal Cations
1) Al Al3+
2) Ni Ni2+
3) Cu Cu2+
4) Hg Hg2+
5) Pt Pt4+
3.) Hydrogen has some properties of a metal, e.g., formation of a positive ion. Thus, its position amongst metals confirms its identity with metals. Therefore, it has been placed along with metals in the series.
Que No. 3 Answers-
1.) The diagram is about electroplating of an article with nickel.
2.) Reaction at cathode :Ni2+ + 2e→ Ni [deposited]
Nickel ions are discharged at the cathode as neutral nickel atoms by gainof electrons [in preference to H+ ions].
Reaction at anode :Ni – 2e → Ni2+
SO2 and OH- ions both migrate to the anode but neither are discharged due to the nature of electrode (active electrode). Instead, the nickel anode loses electrons to give Ni2+ ions in solution.
3.) Solution of nickel sulphate containing a small amount of dilute sulphuric acid is used as an electrolyte in above process.
4.) Iron gets easily rusted when exposed to air. If iron articles are coated with a metal like nickel, tin or zinc, rusting can be prevented.
