Dream of Smart Cities: Myth or Reality in India Essay : The Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi, initiated the concept of smart cities on 25th June 2016, which would create urbanization, modernization, large scale employment and inflow of revenue in terms of taxes and toll fees to the Government. The Smart City is an urban region with best of amenities, infrastructure, easy mobility and is well connected with regards to network, electricity and continuous water supply and other resources made available with ease. The City is also facilitated with proper waste management and clean and hygienic sanitation facilities.
Governments plan on building Smart Cities
The Government has initially announced to create 100 smart cities in different locations. The plan was to build and develop 100 existing cities into smart cities by procuring the required infrastructure, amenities, network connections, well connected roads, water supply, electricity, gas connections etc.
The Government has invited foreign companies and technologies to invest their resources in these cities to make them smarter and brighter.Countries like the US and Germany have decided to contribute to this initiative of the Government. However, the cost involved is huge and millions of investments of funds would be required for construction these cities into smart cities and making provision of all necessary facilities to the citizens.
Smart cities will requireskilled work force and professionals, who can use their innovative skills to create advanced technology and bring into new ideas for further development of these cities. Universities, students, Government institutions should be encouraged to actively participate in the process of upgrading to new systems and technology.The Government should encourage students and lecturers to visit other nations which have been developed to procure their methods, innovation and bring into changes in the education system as well. The government also needs to focus on proper implementation of rules, regulations and policies which will need to be changed from time to time as well as proper allocation of funds to make this smart city project a success.
