Dowry System Essay : Out of all the social evils in India, the dowry system is the most prevalent social evil that is embedded in the deep roots of society. Marriage is a social institution which marks the joy and festivities of a new beginning. However, the dowry is associated with this, sacred ritual and it is regarded as a long-standing evil that has not yet been wiped off from society. ‘Dowry’ refers to the cash and kind that is given by the bride’s family to the groom, which becomes a burden for the former. This system is present in India since the times of colonial rule and in response to this, the Dowry Prohibition Act was introduced in 1961. In the 21st century, the concept of the dowry system barely exists. Nevertheless, instances of dowry systems still exist in remote areas of India and Bangladesh.
Causes and effects of the dowry system
There are multiple factors that contribute to the cause of the social menace, that is the dowry system. Maximum cases related to dowry in India are due to adherence to customs and traditions. People believe that if they are unable to pay the dowry they cannot rid themselves of their daughters, their only burden. This also implies the patriarchal society whereby the sons are only prioritized and the daughter is regarded as a bane and burden. Furthermore, families are compelled to pay taxes because they think that failure to do so will make their daughters suffer. There is also a notion paying enough dowries will ensure their daughter’s security. Grooms belonging to a more well-to-do family charge more dowry. This also denotes the lack of literacy among people who feels that the offering dowry can bring adequate fortune to the bride.
One of the major effects of dowry is the bride’s death perpetrated by the groom himself and sometimes his family also indulges in the heinous process. For instance, dowry deaths in India account for 48 per cent of the total dowry death in the country. Even after being tortured the woman cannot free herself from the confines of the drudgery and thus she had to be the vittim of the brutal murder.
Laws: The various law pertaining to dowry in India is the dowry prevention Act of 1961, The Indian Penal Code and the 113B of the Indian Evidence Act, of 1872. All the aforementioned acts vehemently oppose the dowry and the violence perpetrated by the groom and his family.
Measures to prevent dowry deaths
Firstly, it is necessary for all women to become self-dependent and at least look for a reliable source of employment. Secondly, it is the duty of all parents to treat female and male children equally without making any discrimination. Furthermore, anti-dowry campaigns shall be made launched to stop the menacing act.
Conclusion
It is evident from the above discussion that the issue of dowry systems is multifaceted and severe measures are to be taken to deal with this ongoing issue.
