Essay on Do humans cause global climate change for Class 10, 12, Mains Exam (UPSC, PSC, SSC)

Do humans cause global climate change Essay : With the increase in population and their irresponsible activities, the concentration of greenhouse gases is also increasing. Most human activities lead to the production of greenhouse gases. During the industrial revolution, greenhouse gases have risen drastically. For instance, the emission of carbon dioxide from the burning of fossil fuels is one of the greatest sources of greenhouse gas. Another major source the greenhouse emission is deforestation and the leading cause of the latter is urbanisation. Nitrous oxide is released from farming which is another potent source of greenhouse gas. 97 % of scientists say that global climate change is caused by the emissions of greenhouse gases.

Discussion

IPCC or the Intergovernmental panel on climatic change stated that the exacerbation of the global surface temperature from 1952 to 20210 is mostly caused by irresponsible human activities. The over warming from the greenhouse gases is caused by sulphur dioxide and the various other elements from the fossil fuels combustion that leads to the formation of atmospheric aerosols. Thus, the aerosol is reflecting solar radiation, directly back into space. One of the shortlived gas is the ozone which absorbs the outgoing heat thereby warming the Earth’s surface. However, this greenhouse gas is not directly released as a greenhouse gas. Ozone gas is the amalgamation of gases such as carbon monoxide, methane, and nitrogen oxides.  The narrowing of the ozone in the upper atmosphere is linked with the halocarbons and chlorofluorocarbon. The majority of the CFCs are released by industries thereby warming the surface of the Earth by some ten degrees.

Fertilisers used in agricultural fields for growing crops release a significant amount of nitrous oxides. Furthermore, when the garbage is disposed of in the landfill, it emits methane as it decomposes. As the gas is not always filtered in a suitable way, it gets emitted into the atmosphere thereby causing a climatic change.  Methane is also released when sewage or human waste gets treated anaerobically in the lagoons for the anaerobic ponds. In addition, rice production accounts for 90 per cent of the methane that is released into the atmosphere. Distribution, processing, transportation and extracting also contribute to the emissions of greenhouse gases. Oil spills from the tankers release hydrocarbons which also affect the earth’s climate.

Global climatic changes lead to serious impacts. With the worsening of the climate, human health and livelihoods are impacted.  In addition, the environment around us is also getting affected due to climatic change. Wildfires, excessive downpours, scattered rainfall, and droughts are the various issues that take place when the climate is adversely affected by human activities.  The global sea level has increased by about 0.2 meters or 8 inches and this has mainly occurred due to the carbon dioxide emitted from human activities. The vigour of the North Atlantic hurricanes has increased mainly resulting from the reckless activities of human beings.

Conclusion

In conclusion, it can be undeniably said that reckless human activities are the major causes that lead to global climate change. Day by day, the situation is worsening and by 2050, the area consumed by wildfires in Western countries will rise by six times 2050. Thus it is can be said that human beings shall think judiciously regarding waste emissions and in the process, of doing so they can save the future of our earth.
