Displacement reaction

A chemical reaction in which a more reactive metal replace a less reactive metal and form it’s salt solution is known as displacement reaction.

e.g.

1) when iron nails out in copper sulphate solution then colour of solution changes from blue to light green and reddish brown coating of copper is form on iron.

2) zinc replace from copper from copper sulphate solution to form zinc sulphate and copper . Colour changes of solution from blue to colourless.

3) magnesium replace copper from copper sulphate solution to form magnesium sulphate and copper

• Based on the reactivity of metal they can be arranged in the decreasing order of their reactivity.

• Less reactive metal can not be replace by more reactive metal.

Question:

1) Why some metals displaced other metal from their solution?

– Because of reactivity . More reactive metal displace less reactive metal

2) Why copper is not displaced by iron sulphate solution

– Because copper is less reactive than iron so can not be displaced it .

Iron sulphate + copper  -> no reaction .
