DEFINITION:
The spontaneous mixing of different molecules of gases by random motion to form homogeneous mixture is called diffusion of gases. Diffusion in gases is faster because the gases have large inter molecular spaces between them and hence they move very quickly in all direction. The diffusion of lighter gases is faster than the heavy gases.
EXPLANATION
The rate of diffusion is defined as amount of gas passing through an area per unit time .The rate of diffusion depend on density of gases, temperature, concentration ,pressure and surface area.

Examples of Diffusion of Gases
i) While making food in kitchen, the smell of food is reached through the people sitting in other room because of diffusion in the air ,the vapour from food reaches to them.
ii) Other example is when we open a bottle of perfume in a room, its smell is felt throughout the room this happen because the intermixing of vapour of perfume with air.
Iii) Hydrogen of molar mass 2u is the lightest gas among all gases. So, it will have the fastest rate of diffusion. Diffusion in gases is faster also because they have large inter molecular spaces between them and hence they move very quickly in all direction.
FACTORS AFFECTING THE DIFFUSION OF GASES :
The factors affecting diffusion of gases is size of particles, viscosity and temperature.
