Difference between Work and energy

Difference between Work and energy

Work

1.) When force acts on an object and it gets displaced then work is said to be done.

2.) Work is the defined as the product of force in to displacement.

Work,W = force × displacement

∴ W = f s

3.) If applied force makes certain angle with the direction of displacement, then the component of force is taken along the direction of force i.e. fcosθ, then the work is given as,

∴ W = f s cosθ

4.) When the displacement produced is along the same direction of applied force, the work is said to be positive work.

5.) When the displacement produced is along the opposite direction of applied force, the work is said to be negative work.

6.) When the displacement and the applied force are perpendicular to each other, the work is said to be zero work.

7.) Si unit of work is joule (J).

Energy

1.) The quantity which makes us able to apply the force is termed as energy.

2.) Energy is called as driving force.

3.) It measures the ability to perform the work; hence the work is defined as the capacity of doing work.

4.) Mathematically amount of work done is equivalent to the energy spent; hence formula for energy can also be given as the product of force in to displacement.

Energy, E = force × displacement

∴ E = f s

5.) Energy can be stored in the different forms.

6.) The energy stored in the body due to its mass, shape or position is known as potential energy.

7.) The energy possessed by body due to its motion is called as kinetic energy.

8.) SI unit of energy is also joule (J).
