Difference between Potential energy and Kinetic energy

Difference between Potential and Kinetic energy

Potential energy

1) The energy possessed by a body due to its shape/size/position or mass is known as potential energy.

2) Mass of object is responsible to provide the inertia, which is the main constituent to provide the potential energy.

E. g. stone at rest on the peak of mountain, water stored in reservoir or dams.

4.) Amount of work done required to change the position of object is nothing but the potential energy stored in the object.

Amount work done = potential energy of body

5.) Consider and object of mass ‘m’ is at rest on earth surface, ‘g’ be the acceleration due to gravity at the point, ‘h’ be the height of object above earth’s surface, then the potential energy of object is given as,

∴ Potential energy, E = m × g × h

6) SI unit of potential energy is joule (J).

7) Suppose the children sitting on giant wheel which is initially at rest and then starts moving then potential energy of object can be converted in to kinetic energy.

Kinetic energy

1.) The energy possessed by a body due to its motion is known as kinetic energy.

2.) Mass and velocity of body provides the inertia, hence product of mass and velocity i.e. momentum contributes to provide the kinetic energy.

3.) E.g. Athletes running on a track possess kinetic energy, bullet fired from gun

4.) Amount of work done is nothing but the change in kinetic energy.

Amount work done = change in kinetic energy of body

5) An object of mass ‘m’ starts from rest and runs on running track at speed ‘v’. Let‘t’ be time required by him to cover the distance ‘s’, then the kinetic energy of object is given by,

6) SI unit of kinetic energy is joule (J).

7) Suppose the children enjoying giant wheel which is initially running at certain speed and stops moving, then kinetic energy of object can be converted in to potential energy.
