Definition

1. The extensions or finger like projections of plasma membrane which increase surface area for absorption, This is known as Microvilli. The small hair like structures which are present in all the mammals cell and are sensory in retina, nasal cavity and inner ear, this is known as Cilia.

Motile or non-motile

2. These microvilli are non-motile. These cilia are motile.

Appearance and Involvement

3. These are extremely thin and involved in the absorption. These are taper distally and involved in the movement.

Composed of

4. The microvilli are composed of microfilaments (That lack ultrastructure). The cilia are composed of microtubules (That contain ultrastructure).

Glycocalyx layer

5. The microvilli do contain glycocalyx layer. The cilia do not contain glycocalyx layer.

Basal granules

6. The basal granules does not give rise to microvilli. The basal granules gives rise to cilia.
