Difference between Joule and Calorie
Joule
1) Joule is unit of work and energy.
2) It is denoted as ‘joule’ or J
3) When force of 1 N acts on a object which displaces it by 1 m, then the amount of potential energy stored or work done is said to be joule (J)
Amount work done = potential energy of body
= F.s
∴ W = 1 × 1 N-m = 1 J
4) Conversion of joule to erg can be done with formula
1 joule = 107 erg
5) Conversion of joule to calorie is given as,
1 joule = (1/4.2) calorie
Calorie
1) Calorie is also unit of energy.
2) It is denoted as ‘calorie’ or ‘cal’
3) When temperature of 1 gram of water is raised by 10C, at constant pressure, then the amount of heat energy required to be said as 1 calorie.
4) Calorie can be expressed in some of higher units as
1 kilocalorie= 1000 calorie
5) Conversion of calorie to joule can done as
1 cal= 4.2 joule
