1. Worm which live underground and have segmented body is referred as earthworm. Worms which refer to live near the surface and have segmented body is referred as compost worm.
2. Earthworms are reddish brown in colour. Compost worms are Reddish purple in colour.
3. Earthworms are like segmented worms. Compost worms are like red wiggler worms (like earthworms).
4. Length of the earthworm is about ¼ to 6 inches. Length of the compost worm is about 2 to 3 inches.
5. Speed of reproduction in earthworm is slow. Speed of reproduction in compost worm is high.
6. Earthworm lives in the soil, are essential in aerating, draining the soil and burying organic matter Compost worm are useful in composting food scraps, other organic material and as fishing baits.
7. Earthworm is not suitable for bin vermicomposting system. Compost worms are suitable for bin vermicomposting system.
8. Earthworms are burrowers. Hence they carry food material into the soil. Compost worms are surface dwellers. Hence, they carry food material on to the soil.
