Difference between Decantation and filtration
Decantation |
Filtration |
The process of separation of two Insoluble liquids by pouring one of it is called decantation. |
Filtration is analytical separation technique which is used to separate the solid and liquid. |
DecantationContains two Liquids which are Insoluble which does not get mixed and form two layers. These can be separated by removing upper layer. |
When there is mixture of two components one solid and one liquid, then we can separate these Insoluble mixture with filtration process. |
Decantation has two phases – Solid – liquid phase Liquid – liquid phase. |
Filtration also involves one phase – solid In liquid. Which are insoluble liquid. |
In the decantation Heavier liquid is Below the Lighter liquid. Lighter liquid is decanted. |
In filtration liquid part is filtered which is known as filtrate. And other is residue. |
The barrier or any filter is not required for the Decantation. |
A filter paper or barrier is used for the separation process in filtration. |
Example for the decantation is – water and oil – oil float over the water which is poured down and separate the Oil and water. |
Example of filtration is – mixture Of sand and water. The mixture of sand and water is separated with filtration. The water get filtered with filter paper and sand remains on it. |
