Difference between Alternating and direct current
Alternating Current
- The current whose magnitude and direction reverses periodically is known as alternating current.
- Alternating current is first used with the help of generator invented by Sir Michael Faraday in his experimental analysis of electromagnetic induction.
- Due to its high power rating alternating current is most suitable form of electric energy so that it is used in domestic appliances, in industries etc.
- Alternating current appears like sine wave, hence it depends on frequency.
- Frequency of alternating current in India is 50 Hz.
- The diagrammatical form of alternating current can be visualized as follows,
Direct Current
- The current whose magnitude and direction remains same throughout is known as direct current.
- Direct current is the current which flows along the same direction with constant magnitude.
- Due to its low power rating Direct current is suitable for smaller devices like torches, television etc.
- Direct current appears like straight line; hence it is independent of frequency.
- Frequency of direct is then 0 Hz.
- The diagrammatical form of direct current can be visualized as follows,
