Decomposers are the living organism which feed on dead and decaying organic matter. These are the most important part of food chain. They usually depend on dead organic matter. The decomposers are the last component of food chain. Productivity of ecosystem is generally depend on decomposers.
Process of decomposition
1) In any ecosystem, plant is required. Due to plant level energy starts. For the formation of energy plant requires sunlight and inorganic matter which is present in soil. Uptake of inorganic matter occurs.
2) Plant eaters that is herbivore will eat plant. These herbivores will intake by carnivore and there are some organisms who will eat both that are omnivores, that means complete energy is received by omnivores.
3) Any organism can die that means any living organisms such as plants, herbivore, carnivore or omnivores.
4) The dead body of organisms will contain dead organic matter. Due to presence of dead organic matter these decomposers will convert again dead organic matter into inorganic matter.
5) Again inorganic matter present in soil, and the cycle will repeat.
Properties of decomposition
1) Decomposition process depends on temperature. If high temperature present in surrounding then decomposition will be more and if low temperature present in surrounding then decomposition will be less.
2) The reason behind this is presence of bacteria and fungus. For example: tropical region where high temperature is present there is more decomposition process.
Types of decomposers
Decomposers are divided into 4 types:
1.) Saprophages: Saprophages can be defined as the organisms which feed on dead plant.
2) Coprophages: Coprophages are those organisms which feed on dead excretory matter.
3.) Necrophages: The Necrophages are the living organisms which feed on dead animal material.
4.) Geophages: They feed on dead organic matter present on surface.
