John Wesley, the co-founder of Methodism wrote that “Cleanliness is next to Godliness” and often emphasized the significance of cleanliness in his preachings. He further stated that sinners can cleanse themselves of the immoral aura and get united with God. The term thus implies the cleansing of our body which is maintaining hygiene and purification of our mind at the same time. Cleanliness of mind and body are interconnected with one another. This is because cleanliness gives mental peace, makes a person all the more cheerful and thus he gets more productive in his work.

A child, since his schooldays gets to learn about the importance of maintaining healthy and hygienic habits. These include washing hands before eating, wearing clean clothes, throwing plastic wrappers in the dustbin, and using materials that are not made of plastic. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched a cleanliness campaign such as the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. To increase the efforts to acquire universal sanitation coverage and to put emphasis on sanitation, the Swach Bharat Mission was launched, in 2014. The aim of this mission was to make people aware of the significance of maintaining cleanliness.

As a result, the unclean environment becomes the breeding ground of germs and bacteria. Most importantly, mosquito thrives in unclean drains and water bodies and thus people become the victims of dreadful diseases such as dengue and malaria. Also drinking water from unhealthy sources of water causes diseases such as typhoid and diarrhoea. This calls for the dire need of cleansing the water bodies and consume healthy potable water.
It is also important to focus on using non-renewable sources of energy to cleanse the environment by reducing air pollution. For instance, using electric vehicles instated of petrol-driven vehicles helps in reducing the negative impact on the environment. It is also mandatory for industries and factories to check and monitor their methods of waste disposal. For example, vermicomposting, incineration, landfills and waste compaction are the various ways by which they can clean the environment around them thereby reducing the impact of environmental pollution.

Ergo, it can be said that environmental pollution can be reduced if people are aware of the benefits of keeping the environment clean. To inculcate the values of cleanliness children are taught about healthy hygiene habits and the need of cleaning their environment from school days. Enabling them to participate in campaigns also helps them to enlighten about the benefits of keeping their body and environment clean.
