iii) Economy, power and protection were in the hands of English rulers and responsibilities of area were in the hands of Mughals and Nawab this is called as ‘Dual Rule’.

i) In 1798, Lord Wellesley introduced subsidiary treaty.
ii) Itintroduced the policy of two governing system or bodies which is known as Subsidiary treaty system.
iii) This treaty has 2 purpose 1 was protect the restricted area under the company and the other was make the barricades of trust worthy Indian states around the company rule.
iv) States which sign this treaty were bound to keep British soldiers.
v) It was necessary to keep an English man as resident or representative with whose advice the rulers should follow in administration.

In 1848 Dalhousie became the Governor General of India.
i) Dalhousie introduced Doctrine of Lapse rule. This was those kings who do not have their own successor or had adopted children would not get the right to rule their states.
ii) He also captured different states through wars.
iii) By this Annexation Policy Dalhousie captured Satara, Jaithpur, Jhansi, Nagpur, Udaipur by Doctrine of Lapse rule.

i) Bentinck decreased the number of soldiers from troops and cut short annual expenses of administration.
ii) For collection of revenue Bentinck used the policy of “Todermall’s system of collection” and fixed the taxation for 30 years.
iii) He made a law to abolish sati, child marriage and human sacrifice.
iv) He constructed National Highways and bridges. Also he made a law to appoint Indians as a High officials.
