Marking Scheme:

(1) Answer the following questions (16×1)

(a) Name some daily activities in which we use water.

Answer – We use water for various activities such as drinking, washing, bathing, making food, cleaning, brushing etc.

(b) Name the sources from which we get water.

Answer – There are lots of different sources of water but mainly we get water from ponds, rives, lakes and wells.

(c) What is the most part of Earth is covered with?

Answer – The most part or two third of the Earth is covered with water.

(d) Why we can’t use ocean water for our everyday activities?

Answer – We can’t use ocean water for our everyday activities because ocean water is very salty or saline.

(e) How saline water of ocean converts into normal water and reaches other water sources?

Answer –As we read in the previous chapter that when heat is applied to salt water, the water evaporates and the salt remains. Like that when water evaporates from the ocean, the salt doesn’t evaporates with it. The vaporized water then go to sufficient height and condenses into small droplets of water in cold condition and falls into ground as rain.

(f) What is transpiration process?

Answer –Transpiration is a process by which plants remove water from their body in the form of vapour.

(g) How water turns into cloud?

Answer –When water evaporates, the vapour of water goes to the sky and at sufficient height contacting with cold air it gets condensed and becomes small droplets. These small droplets are clouds.

(h) Which methods helps in the formation of clouds?

Answer – Evaporation and condensation both helps in the formation of clouds.

(i) What is rain?

Answer – Clouds are actually a cluster of small droplets of water. Sometimes these small droplets join together and form larger sized droplets. After that they become so heavy that they can’t stay there in clouds so they begin to fall. These falling down water droplets is called rain.

(j) Briefly explain the water cycle.

Answer – Water evaporates from ocean and falls down on land as rain, hail or snow. After falling on land they again go back to sea by rivers. Then again the water gets evaporated and again water goes back to sea. This continuous process of circulation of water is known as the water cycle.

(k) What is ground water?

Answer – Whenever rain falls on the ground, the soil absorbs a part of it. Some of the water are bored back to air by the process of evaporation and the rest goes down into the ground. This water is ground water.

(i) How to bring our ground water?

Answer – We can bring groundwater by a tubewell and a handpump.

(m) What problems continuous heavy rain could bring?

Answer – Continuous heavy rain could lead to the rise of water level in rivers, lakes and ponds. The water of these can spread over a large area and cause floods.

(n) What happens if it doesn’t rain for a long period?

Answer –If it doesn’t rain for a long time, the water level in ponds and wells may decrease and if continues like that they may get dried up leading to drought.

(o) Why should we conserve water?

Answer – We need water for our daily activities and lots of other works. Not only us, other animals and plants are also dependent on water for their survival. But the water we can use are very limited and we cannot use ocean water directly. As the population is increasing the need of water is also increasing but the amount of water decreasing. So it is very necessary to conserve water.

(p) What is rainwater harvesting?

Answer – Rainwater harvesting is a method of water conservation. In this harvesting method rainwater is collected and stored for later use.
