Marking Scheme:

(1) Answer the following questions (15×1)

(a) Does an empty bottle contain anything in it?

Answer – Yes an empty bottle contains air in it.

(b) How would you know if an empty bottle contains air in it or not?

Answer – If we submerge an empty bottle into a bucket of water we can see that water isn’t able to enter into the bottle and slightly tilting the bottle would let the air out in the form of a bubble.

(c) What is atmosphere?

Answer – Our Earth is surrounded by a thin layer of air, this layer is expanded many kilometres above the ground. This layer is called atmosphere.

(d) Why mountaineers carry oxygen cylinders with them?

Answer –As we move higher in the atmosphere the air gets thinner and rarer. Mountaineers carry oxygen cylinders so that they won’t have problem breathing in high altitude.

(e) What is air made up of?

Answer – Air is made up of various types of gases.

(f) Name the components of air?

Answer –The components of air are water vapour, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, dust and smoke.

(g) Which component of air helps in burning?

Answer – Oxygen helps in burning.

(h) Which gas helps us to breath?

Answer – Oxygen gas helps us to breath.

(i) Which gas makes up the major part of air?

Answer – Nitrogen gas makes up the major part of air.

(j) What happens if you stay in a closed room and some materials are burning?

Answer – If we stay in a closed room and in the room some materials are burning then we could have severe suffocation due to the accumulation of carbon dioxide gas and burning of oxygen gas.

(k) What is smoke? It is good for us?

Answer – Burning of fuel produces smoke. Smoke contains gases, fine dust particles and is often very harmful to our lungs.

(l) How dust particles are prevented from entering into our respiratory system?

Answer –In the nostrils of our nose, there are mucous and fine hairs which prevents dust particles from entering into our respiratory system.

(m) How organisms living in water get air for respiration?

Answer –Organisms living in water gets air from dissolved gases in water for respiration.

(n) Why bubbles come out of soil when we put water in it?

Answer –Soil also contains dissolved air in it so when we put water in soil bubbles come out.

(o) How oxygen level is maintaining in atmosphere?

Answer – At day time plants use carbon dioxide for photosynthesis and in return release oxygen gas. These oxygen gas released by the plants helps greatly in the maintenance of oxygen level in atmosphere.
