B.) Answer the following questions briefly
1.) What is meant by “my light is spent”?
Ans – It refers to the fact that the poet, Milton’s eyesight has been lost
2.) Why is the world dark and white to the poet?
It is so because the poet is blind and thus, is unable to see any colour.
3.) Who is the “maker” in this sonnet?
The maker is the almighty himself.
4.) Is god a hard taskmaster ?
God is not a hard taskmaster, instead he is a man of mercy who expects nothing in return
5.) Does God require his appreciation?
No, God has an abundance of workers to carry out His will. He is in no way dependent on a man’s admiration.
6.) Is Milton afraid of the almighty?
Yes, initially he is afraid of the almighty because he thinks he has been unable to serve him properly due to his blindness
7.) Discuss the meaning of the closing line “ they also serve who only stand and wait”.
Some angels choose not to engage in any active duty. They simply bow respectfully and humbly before God. They also serve God obediently.
C1.) Long answer questions
1.) Discuss the poet’s feeling and emotions
Milton believes he has the gift of poetry writing. Although he is eager to do so, he is unable to because he is blind and it is of no use. In actuality, he currently has no use for it. He regrets losing his vision and being unable to use the poetic talent He has given him.
2.) Why is the poet sad? What has happened to him?
The poet is depressed because, in his middle age, he started to lose his vision. And as a result, he is no longer able to compose poetry. So, he is depressed about his approach to serving God.
3.) Why does the poet fear from God in this poem?
He was concerned that God would criticise him for squandering his talent after his death on the Day of Judgment.
4.) Which do you think is superior insight or eyesight?
Without a doubt, eye-sight is very important. Life is meaningless without sight. Without having seen it with our own eyes, nothing can be imagined to be anything but ugly. The way we visualise colours, the rising sun, and other visuals etc. is all with our eyes. Without vision, scientific discovery would not be possible. Therefore, in my opinion, vision is better than insight.
5.) How does the poet get consolation?
The poet questioned whether God would be so unfair as to demand work from him after taking away his sight. He received the response based on personal experience, which provided him with comfort.
6.) Who answered his question?
The poet’s consciousness and his insight answered the question.
7.) Is God absolutely merciful? Is he a king of kings?
God’s kindness, justice, and mercy became clear to him. God’s status as the king of kings was another thing he discovered. As His servants, He has countless angels and other swift agents. All over the universe, They are constantly carrying out His commands. He is a king of kings, therefore.
8.) Will God forgive the poet?
He would have to completely submit to God’s will, so yes. As a result, He would pardon him.
9.) Do you think that God needs only humble submission give arguments
We are inhabitants of a world created by the almighty himself. He reigns supreme among all kings. God has an abundance of servants to carry out His will. God doesn’t ask for an explanation for any gifts that He gives to people. He desires from a man an unwavering submission to His will and unwavering faith in Him. God views such individuals as having carried out their responsibilities even though they did nothing much but maintained their readiness to obey God’s command regardless of what it might be. As a result, God even regards those who simply stand and wait as good workers. Their modest submission thus served God.
10.) What lesson do you learn from the poem?
The lesson the poet imparts to us in the poem “On His Blindness” is that we must endure our suffering without lamenting it or losing faith in God and His justice. We must realise that whatever circumstance we find ourselves in, it is in accordance with God’s will.
C2.) Group discussion
Discuss the following in Group or pairs
1.) The value of eyes in life
Our bodies depend on our eyes. The organs of sight are the eyes themselves. We use our eyes to see. Only and only with our eyes can we see the splendour of nature, the hues of skies and the wonders of the world and everything else. We can appreciate sightseeing as long as we have vision, we can fly aeroplanes. In other words, we ought to be aware that if we have eyes, the world is ours.
2.) Loss of vision leads to suffering and problems in life.
Without our eyes, we would have to suffer greatly in order to see anything or understand the world. We cannot leave quickly for anywhere. On the busy road, we are unable to move freely. A blind person faces risk at every turn. Life gets monotonous. The blind man is completely defeated. He believes that there would be no purpose to life. There is pain and difficulty everywhere.
