As we discussed in heterotrophic mode of nutrition, all the animals depend on another animal to get their food. Categories of animals like herbivores, carnivores and omnivores. Nutrition in animals is classified into 3 types based on what they eat.
1.) Saprophytic nutrition :Saprophytic mode of nutrition can be termed as the living organisms which feed on dead organic matter, such organisms are called saprophytic organisms. The examples of such organisms are bacteria and fungi, these organisms live on dead organic matter, like presence of fungus and bacteria on bread.
2.) Parasitic nutrition : These organisms live and feed on another living organisms, such organisms are called parasitic organisms or parasites. The living organism on which parasites are living are called as host. These host can be plants or animals. These parasites can live within the body of host or on the body of host. They can be harmful for the host or even have ability to kill. The most common type of harmless parasite is bacteria E.coli which live in the gut of humans. Similarly harmful blood sucking insects can cause infection to the host.
3.) Holozoic nutrition:The holozoic nutrition can be termed as the nutrition process which completely takes place in the body. For example : human
The process takes place in 5 steps:
1.) Ingestion : The process of consuming or taking the food or intake called as ingestion.
2.) Digestion : Digestion is the process of breaking down large molecules of food into smaller food particle.
3.) Absorption : After digestion the 3rd step is absorbing the digested food material in the body.
4.) Assimilation :Assimilation is the 4th step in the nutrition process, that means now utilizing the energy for work.
5.) Egestion : Last step in nutrition is excretion of partially digested or undigested food material.
Question and answers :
1.) What is heterotrophic nutrition ?
Answer :-Heterotrophic nutrition is the second type of nutrition in which one organism depends on another organism for nutrition or for getting the food material.
2.) What are the types of heterotrophic nutrition ?
Answer :-There are 3 types of nutrition : Saprophytic nutrition, parasitic nutrition and holozoic nutrition.
3.) What is saprophytic nutrition ?
Answer :-Saprophytic mode of nutrition can be termed as the living organisms which feed on dead organic matter, such organisms are called saprophytic organisms. The examples of such organisms are bacteria and fungi, these organisms live on dead organic matter, like presence of fungus and bacteria on bread.
