UNIT-3
THE SELFISH GIANT – I
Look at the picture given below and answer the questions that follow.
1.) What do you notice in the picture?
Ans: I observed some children playing in the garden. A large figure was watching them as they played. One child was sitting on his knee, and another was collecting fruit while sitting on his thigh. Another person was using a ladder to reach the giant, and a child was attempting to walk on his legs while sitting on his foot. The people around him were joking and having fun.
2.) What do you think of the size and sitting posture of the figure which is looking at the children?
Ans: The man is gigantic compared to the children, and he looks depressed for some reason. He’s watching the kids play while they play, which suggests that he might be longing for something.
3.) What is the mood of the children?
Ans: The children are having fun. They are all joyful. This is evident by the manner they play.
A.) The Selfish Giant (Part I)
COMPREHENSION
Answer the following questions:
Answer:
1.) The giant and the children are the play’s two main characters. The North Wind, the Autumn, the Snow, and the Frost are the additional characters.
2.) I believe that the names “tall girl,” “round boy,” “square girl,” etc. have been given to children for the purposes of making the story more humorous and appealing. When used to describe a girl or a boy, adjectives like “tall,” “round,” “square,” etc. are more likely to annoy a child’s interest.
3.) Both the old Giant and the Giant are identical. In contrast to “the Giant,” who is compassionate, the “old Giant” is selfish.
4.) Children were never asked to play in the Giant’s garden – it was always made clear that he wanted to enjoy it by himself. From this, we can infer that the Giant is selfish.
