Summary:

This chapter gives us a picture of the importance of traditional bakers in Goa. The writer compares the past and the present lives. At the beginning of the chapter, we are told that the Portuguese loved bread, which was an essential part of their culture.

Just like the people, their culture also blended with the people of India. The first few lines make us aware that only a few people eat the loaves of bread made by the traditional bakers, unlike in the past. But, that in no way reduces their importance. They are still considered a crucial part of society.

The writer states that some bakers still travel around the village by jingling the baker’s bamboo announcing his arrival in the morning. The bakers have passed on their tradition to the children who continue selling loaves of bread.  Though times have changed, the bakers’ title has not! They are still known as pader in Goa.

The writer talks about his childhood days when he considered the baker his friend, companion, and guide. Through his reminiscence, he makes us aware of the popularity the bakers enjoyed then. They filed their baskets with loaves in the morning, and by the evening, everything was sold out.

The author and many children like him used to wake up hearing the baker’s bamboo jingle. The kids enjoyed the musical entry of the baker. They gathered around the baker to get their share of bread-bangles. The servants of the house brought the loaves.

The author recalls the way the kids were pushed aside by the baker with a mild rebuke. The bread-bangles were primarily meant for children, while the loaves were for the elders. The writer also gives us a glimpse of the way they brushed their teeth in the past.

It was nothing like we do today! The people had to pluck the bamboo leaf to make a toothbrush. The children did not like to take the trouble and sometimes went on without brushing their teeth.

The author then points out the importance of bread in the lives of the Goan people. Bol, a sweet bread, was considered an essential gift for a marriage ceremony. A party or a feast had no charm if the host did not provide bread. On almost every momentous occasion, loaves of bread, cakes, and bolinhas played a prominent role, be it an engagement party or Christmas Eve. This made the baker’s furnace in the village very crucial.

The bakers or the bread-sellers had a dress that separated them from the others. It was known as kabai. It was a single long piece dress that reached down to the knees. He saw the bakers wearing a shirt and trousers shorter than full-length ones during the author’s childhood and more protracted than half pants. People who wore half-pants that reached below the knees were commented that they dressed like a pader!
