- Keshav Gangadhar Tilak was born 23 July 1856, in a Marathi Hindu Chitpavan Brahmin family at Ratnagiri.
- His father was a school Teacher and Sanskrit scholar who died when Tilak was sixteen.
- He obtained his Bachelor of Arts in first class in Mathematics from Deccan college of Pune in 1877.
- He left his M.A course of study midway to join the L.L.B course instead & in 1879 he obtained his L.L.B degree from govt. of Law College.
- After graduation, Tilak started teaching mathematics at a private school in pune.
- He withdrew the teaching & become a journalist; Tilak actively participated in public affairs.
- He stated religion and practical life are not different. The step beyond is it’s to serve humanity and the next step is to serve god.
- He was inspired by vishnushastri chiplunkar.
- Tilak began a mass movement towards independence by an emphasis on religions & cultural revival.
- Tilak was one of the first and strongest advocates of swaraj (self rule) and a strong radical in Indian consciousness.
- He was an Indian nationalist, teacher and an independence activist.
- He was one third of the Lal-Bal-Pal trimurties.
- Tilak was the first leader of the Indian independence movement. The British colonial authorities called him “The father of Indian unrest”.
- He was also conferred with the title of “LOKMANYA” which means accepted by the people’s their leader.
- He is known for his quote in Marathi “swaraj is my birth right and I shall have it!”
- He was launched many movement for freedom of India such as swadeshi, home rule league.
- He wrote many books like Shrimadh Bhagvad Gita rahasaya, karma yoga, the Orion or researches into antiquity of the Vedas etc.
- Tilak was started the two newspapers namely kesari (Marathi) and Maratha (English).
- He was started the celebrated shiv- jayanti and ganesh- chathurti for unity among the people.
- He died on 1st August 1920 in Mumbai.
